Product Description

Boodlers, and pikers, and slyboots… oh my! It’s December 1901, when the paths of three of the era’s notable characters cross in the nation’s capital: the Wizard of Oz, the Countess von Schnurrenberger, and Harry Reese, insurance investigator. Harry has come to Washington to solve a string of jewelry thefts. But first he must match wits with a throng of thirsty newspapermen, a pack of rapacious lobbyists, and a young devotee of the Wizard’s. And as is usual, his dear wife Emmie has her own agenda.

More About the Author

Finding himself misplaced in the 21st century, Robert Bruce Stewart has opted to retire to what he hopes will be a more congenial era for a person of his sensibilities by means of fiction writing.

Meanwhile, his temporal self lives with his wife and cat in a small-town hermitage in western Massachusetts where he spends his idle hours tending to the needs of tadpoles and keeping his ill-mannered bamboo grove in check.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry and Emmie rock! 14 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback
I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book by the author, for review. This is the third Harry Reese Mystery I have read and in Kalorama Shakedown I think the author has found his style. Less Wodehouse and Christie, more his own delightful creation. Harry and Emmie are back to their wonderful bantering selves and Harry has further developed his own way of coping with his wife's eccentric ways - he seems content to just let her be herself. (Why aren't more men like that?) This adventure takes them to Washington along with two more great characters - Elizabeth and the Countess. A slightly bemused, amiable Harry ambles through the plot involving jewel thefts. the Press, politics and so much more. The story was gripping, shocking and yet great fun. I look forward to the next instalment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 7 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback
I read this book over a weekend and I absolutely loved it.It is very well written and the characters are so entertaining that I couldn't put it down.
My favourite was Emmie, the insurance investigators cheeky wife, who has a few secrets of her own and likes to have the odd gamble.
The author has a huge talent for storytelling and I look forward to reading his other books.
I think the Harry Reese Mysteries should be adapted for a screenplay- it would be great material for a TV series or a movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insurance investigator who's just great fun! 5 Oct 2013
By Maureen
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book! Having read ' Crossings'(also part of The Harry Reese Mysteries), I was eager to see if the author could maintain that same level of satirical humour and suspense. Well Mr Stewart you've done that in spades! It was so entertaining. This particular mystery involved jewellery thefts and murder, and, as usual, there were a lot of suspects, but I was kept guessing right up to the end, and I think that is a skill in itself. I have quickly become a fan of Harry and his wife Emmie, and look forward to future mysteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read 15 Oct 2013
By Shar
Format:Kindle Edition
I was sent this book as a download by the author after I had entered a competition to win it.

I enjoyed the book. I wasn't too keen on the political side of things, but that is just me, but the mystery that Emmie and Harry find themselves involved in was enjoyable to read.

I will read more books on their exploits when I get the chance.

The book is a gentle mystery but worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Funny Gum Shoe Book 24 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I was very kindly sent a Kindle copy of this book by Robert Stewart in return for an honest Review. You can see the full Review on my Blog Post #400 in November 2013.

The Novel was so redolent of an old black and white "gum shoe" movie, and it really bought back memories of Saturday afternoon snuggled up watching films based on plots like these when I was a kid. I really think that it would translate to a TV programme so well.

I loved the characterisations, in particular Emmie - her lines of dialogue were precious. The plot went along at a healthy clip too .... on the whole the work was funny, in places actually laugh out loud so ...... a big 4 Stars.

I will definitely be seeking out more in this series, the Harry Reese Mysteries.
