I was disappointed because of the low sound and picture quality of this DVD. Particularly the orchestra sounded really bad.

Format: DVD
I do like some light operetta for a change from my heavier collection and this is about as pleasant as they come. Kalman has a good ear for melody, some catchy tunes and others just plain pleasant.
In this film the picture quality is good and the sound quality excellent.
There is not a bad voice amongst the cast, but I single out Anna
Moffo whose voice rings out bright and clear in the upper register.
I like the choice of costume, men mainly in evening dress, but a few uniforms thrown in for good measure. The ladies wear some exotic hats and delightful dresses. The chorus girls are wearing equally exotic costumes, but much briefer.
The plot is of course convoluted, mix ups and misunderstandings are the order of the day, with romantic plots thrown in. The characters have titles like Prince, Princess, Count and so on. After 90 minutes of assorted confusion it all works out in the end.
To sum up this is one hour and a half of pleasing light music with a visual feast of sets and costumes, a very relaxing experience.
The booklet is equipped with a useful synopsis and scene timings. There is also an article on background and production

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Oppicelli/Genua on 29 Jun. 2012
Format: DVD
Peccato.
E. Oppicelli - Genua/Italien
In english? voilà = I read what Barbara Schmidt writes (see amazon.de)confessing her love for this operetta. Right! Bravissima! This work is a masterpiece of the musical theatre and I have always loved it with all my heart, but NOT this version ruining the original orchestral arrangements and where the presence of Kollo et al. does not justify or guarantee anything. Germany has destroyed many operettas, the ZDF television company produced horrible things changing 'le carte in tavola' as we say here, but the germans think to be the world's bosses and do what they like to do with no care if their meaning may offend. What a pity.
Ernesto Oppicelli - Genova Certosa - Italy

Very good singer.Anna Moffo is a great Sylva. The film version don,t equal a good stage performance. But for the few DVD's available for operettas that worth the buying
