Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda was a Bohemian composer, who spent most of his working life in Germany; indeed, he served as music director for the royal court of Donaueschingen for some 40 years, only retiring to Karlsruhe shortly before his death. He scored a good deal of success with his first symphony and this was the first of a series of seven such works, the final one of which - dating from the 1840s - remained unpublished (though there are two recordings of it available). Highly regarded in his lifetime, more recent musical writing has tended to dismiss his later output as consisting of fashionable potboilers that lack the originality and even the substance of his earlier works; my own take is that the later symphonies are just as enjoyable and imaginative as the earlier ones - Schumann was an admirer - but it is perhaps worth noting that he did abandon the genre for the last twenty years of his life.

The three quartets recorded here are his only works in that form and date from the 1830s. They were commissioned by one of the editors from Kalliwoda's longstanding music publisher, the firm Peters of Leipzig, though the liner notes indicate that the initial suggestion came from the composer himself. Kalliwoda's stylistic fingerprints, on the evidence of the music I have heard, are melodic fecundity, contrapuntal mastery and a general compositional facility that might remind you of the young Mendelssohn - all these gifts are amply on display here, allied with an imaginative approach to scoring (a talent evident in his symphonies too).

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for listening, music for fun. 28 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
Kaliwoda may be the first composer to write a string quartet movement that uses pizzicato (plucked strings) all the way through. So much for the academic stuff. His music is easily approachable, perhaps not 'great' music that shifted the direction of musical thought, but well crafted and thoroughly enjoyable, and makes a change from more famous names from the late 18th - early 19th centuries whose musical cliches may have become too familiar. The music is well played, and well recorded on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Music - Fine Performance - Neglected Composer 15 Nov 2008

I discovered Kalliwoda a number of years ago with a CD of two of his symphonies. The music is romantic period, somewhat like a cross of Schubert and Mendelssohn. They were so pleasant, I've kept my eyes open for other pieces by him.

These 3 Quartets are really enjoyable. The more I've listened, the more pleasurable they've become. The last movement of the third quartet could easily have been written by Paganini. It is virtuosic music and totally delightful.
