Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

First heard trying to calm Ol' Dirty Bastard on "Got Your Money" from his Nigga Please, 20-year-old Kelis now appears with her own album. Multi-threat production team the Neptunes turn the aptly named Kaleidoscope into the same kind of playground they provided for ODB, and even singing the masterminds' songs, Kelis quickly establishes it as her own hip-hop-wise R&B turf. Though it quickly gained attention for the ranting "Caught Out There" ("I hate you so much right now!"), the disc proves this unique singer equally as convincing in other complex moods, such as a comic take on romantic pain ("Game Show") and an offbeat memory of childhood ("Roller Rink"). More playful than Mary J. Blige, Kelis makes as strong a first impression--and, like Blige, shows every sign of sticking around. --Rickey Wright

BBC Review

Kaleidoscope was not simply the first time many heard the smoky, rich voice of 20-year-old Harlem-born Kelis Rogers; it was also their first encounter with the wizardry of young production team Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, aka The Neptunes. This marriage of the two creative forces forged an album that rewrote the RnB rulebook.

With Kaleidoscope, Kelis appeared as if from outer space with her shock of brightly coloured hair and sang with experience seemingly beyond her years. The Intro sends up the autobiographical skits of the era: we hear a minute or so of nostalgic mumbo jumbo, when she cuts in with, “Yeah, yeah, and now I’m grown up”. Kelis retains this sassy forthright attitude throughout the album.

There is no formula here – considering its time, Kaleidoscope offers little sultry swing beat or neo-soul, instead featuring The Neptunes’ acoustic hip hop beats with their touches of otherworldly, Middle Eastern and Arabic influences. Caught Out There broke Kelis in the UK, with its “I hate you so much right now” refrain – it still steals the show today, and was one of those songs that was heard everywhere at the time. Ghetto Children, which features Williams’ and Hugo’s band N*E*R*D, is swooning, urban RnB that owes something to the Fugees. Although it dabbles in a lot of genres, Kaleidoscope sidesteps cliché – the doo-wop heavy soul of Suspended, the AOR of Mars, and the sing-song strangeness of Mafia all possess sufficient individuality.

Williams and Hugo would soon be ubiquitous, writing and overseeing a run of era-defining records for the likes of Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé; but for a while it looked like Kelis would forever be the “I hate you so much right now” singer. In 2003 she broke free from any such typecasting with the release of her Milkshake single, and in doing so confirmed her reputation as one of the premier vocalists of the 00s.

Kaleidoscope is a perfect combination of a young, ambitious singer and a production team unafraid to experiment. To that end it is one of the most exciting albums of its time, and although subsequently emulated it still sounds fresh and surprising.

--Nick Levine

This Is Good Stuff 27 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
'Caught Out There' may be the song that launched Kelis as a star, but it is far from being the standout track of this very promising debut release. The sexy groove of 'Good Stuff' and the quirky delight that is 'Roller Rink' both outdo the monster hit of earlier this year. But, for sure, the greatest song on the album is 'Mars', which will inevitably become a future R&B classic. Elsewhere on the album, Kelis's talents are not quite so sensational. 'Get Along With You', 'In The Morning' and 'Mafia' are good songs, but not in the league of the aforementioned. Overall, this is an impressive album that is certainly worth buying. There is clearly much more to Kelis than the gimmicky rant of 'Caught Out There'.

Buy this album 12 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD
this is perhaps the best album i have bought this year. Every track on here is good. There are a few dodgy moments but Game show is a track which can only be taken in good humour. Mafia is one of the standout tracks of the album, it profiles kelis' vocal talents very well. mars is another of those brilliant tracks and for some reason my cd has become scratched on that particular track so i am actually willing to go and buy another copy because it is missing one track. Ghetto children is one of the more upbeat tracks on the album and if carried very well by the male vocalist who sings with kelis. all of the tracks on this album are great I reccomend all music fans to buy this.

This is a truly fantastic CD. I see that other reviews have singled out the odd track as rubbish or said that the album as a whole has some dodgy bits. This is just not true! Kelis and her production team are major talents and I only hope that this 20 year old can live up to this initial promise and that Kaleidoscope does not turn out to be some kind of aural "Citizen Kane"
