Fantastic overview 1 Jun 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
With the acceptance of rock music as a valid art form there has been a proliferation of boring and pretentious literature on the subject. Thank god this book isn't one of them. In fact, Derogatis is able to fuse good writing with the enjoyment of rock music for what it is: a primal illiterate art form. In this particular case, Derogatis presents an overview of a type of rock 'n' roll which is about sensory overload, "unreality", and FUN!!! This book covers everything in "head" music from the Beatles, Beach Boys, to Kraftwerk, Can, and the Flaming Lips. All in pop historical context. Get it.

A must for fans of Psychedelia, lava lamps and scratchy ol' close and plays. Discovered a treasure trove of bands I've never heard before. Thanks, Man! Buy this book!

Clearly our author is no expert on psychedelia. Other than that it's on OK collection of rock critic musings, worth a skim if you see it in a book shop and have half an hour to kill.

But I'd like to see a tome on this subject from gigidunnit (see review above) - sounds like he really knows his stuff! Chapter One: explore the line from the Kinks, Yardbirds and John Coltrane via Blue Cheer and Hawkwind to Acid Mothers Temple and Grizzly Bear.
