A nice tenor ukulele for the price 19 Jan 2010
By A Conrad - Published on
This review is for the Kala Solid Spruce Top Tenor Ukulele

I am a bit surprised that there are no reviews yet for this model. Having owned one for a while now, I decided to post a review.

This is a Kala tenor ukulele with a solid sitka spruce top (model Kala KA-ST). The sides and back are laminate mahogany, with a mahogany neck. It has a high gloss finish, and looks really pretty with the traditional white/black binding. It also has chrome die-cast tuners, which are easier to tune AND keeps the ukulele in tune compared to the traditional friction pegs. Depending on the seller, it may have stock GHS strings or it may be upgraded by the seller to Nylgut strings (which sound a lot better). If it comes with other strings, you can always change the strings (it's quite easy).

Also, I've seen many ukulele reviews where users complain about the instrument not staying in tune. Keep in mind that the strings are usually nylon, and are prone to stretching, so don't be surprised if it seems that it is off tune by a half step (or a whole step even) a few hours after tuning. Give it a week or two of having to retune every day (or in between songs, if you play a lot). After the strings are stretched out, it will generally stay in tune. Standard tuning is GCEA, with the G being a high-G. An alternative way is to string with a low-G. The strings are easy to replace with your favorite brand/type.

The fingerboard is made of rosewood, with inlaid position markers and nickel silver frets.

Playability - Out of the box, the Kala KA-ST was ready to go. It came with black GHS strings, so I immediately changed the strings to Nylgut strings (hi-G) and sanded down the saddle and nut to lower the action. In about half an hour, It was ready to go, and it sounded better than the stock strings.

This also comes in a concert size (KA-SC), which is smaller than this KA-ST, but larger than a standard (soprano).

Why only a four-star rating? It is more a reflection of Amazon and/or the seller not making this item available for Amazon Prime (and free shipping). Also, why put cheap strings on this ukulele when it would cost just a little bit more to upgrade it to better strings? I would give the instrument itself a 4.5 star rating (or 9 out of 10), but there is no half-star option, and I rarely give out 5-star ratings unless the item completely wows me and makes me jump up and dance.

Overall, this is a good ukulele. Whether it be your first ukulele, or an upgrade, or as a part of a collection, it plays well, looks good, and is not too expensive. I upgraded from the Kala KA-S to this Kala KA-ST.

Beautiful Looking, Sounding, Playing Ukulele! 14 Nov 2010
By J. M. Taylor - Published on
This was my first uke (having messed with guitars off and on over my life), and I love this thing. The previous reviewer did an excellent job telling everyone about this uke's materials and playability, so I will try not to rehash that.

I bought my ukulele set up with Aquila nylgut strings - I totally recommend this swap out as the strings are very warm sounding. The action was also lowered to 2.5 mm at the 12th fret by a ukulele specialist, so it plays great (though I don't know how it played out of the box).

The tenor size gives you more room on the fretboard to play around with, and the spruce top gives it a brighter, louder quality. It really is beautiful to look at and to listen too - so mellow.

The only down side I feel is present with this ukulele is the same downside you would find with ANY geared-tuner ukulele: it's a little top-heavy and slightly unbalanced. Personally I recommend a 'Uke Leash' to make life easier.

Besides all that - this is great; a step-up from a beginner's uke but it won't break the bank like some of the really high-end ones.

I was never a stellar guitarist, and I'm better at the uke. Part of this is because the uke is, frankly, easier to play (4 nylon strings vs. 6 steel ones). But I also attribute my willingness to practice to this particular ukulele. The build, sound, and feel are excellent and it's beyond fun to play one.

Recommend it 100%
