Another unique martial arts adventure with the easy-going Irish American martial artist Connor Burke, and every bit as good as the other books in the series. The harsh desert environment is depicted in vivid detail and the tension of the US-Mexico border comes across thick and real. The insights into martial arts and dojo training are first-rate, coming from the author's deep personal experience as they do. However it's the characters that really make the books so engaging: tough ex-cops, hardnosed bitches, eager young students, the aging Japanese master Yamashita, and best of all Connor Burke himself, who despite his considerable ability never takes himself too seriously, and is all the more likeable for it. If you're looking for a fast-paced martial arts thriller with a hero you can happily connect with, Kage is highly recommended.

His best yet! 12 July 2011
By Kashin - Published on Amazon.com

Really enjoyed this one--so much so, I found myself reading it standing up in the line at the DMV! That's how not-put-downable "Kage" is. Unlike "Tengu" which I found a tad bit farfetched, this story is current, topical and plausible. Best of all, it provides a needed dose of realism between the worlds of dojo training and actual combat. Donahue's plotting is so tight, and his characters so well-drawn, that he doesn't even need (and therefore doesn't use) the gratuitously exploitative sex and violence one commonly finds in many thrillers. DeMille and Lustbader, look out! Donahue's slipped into your "dead angle" and made it look effortless.

Even better than the last Burke thriller 12 July 2011
By Rooney Fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
These days many of the big names in suspense and mystery writing have co-writers and their stuff is sometimes a conglomeration of mismatched pieces. Their novels can read like they were written by committees. Not so with Kage. It's pure Donohue. The writing flows as smoothly as one of Connor Burke's (the protagonist) sword swipes. There's plenty of realistic action, interesting interplay between the characters and, best of all, a great story. Donohue knows what he's writing about. He has black belts in karatedo and kendo as well as a background in college teaching -- just like Burke. One thing Burke and his creator don't have in common is that Burke's no writer, while Donohue is. And he's a damn good one. And Kage is one of his best!

Good story! Great Characters 9 Aug 2011
By Keith V. Caswell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Kage: The Shadow

In as much as I love a great tome. I, also, very much enjoy a quick read story. One which is well written, with a decent story line and a loveable main character... Especially when that character is continued over a series. Case in point Tom Clancy's: Jack Ryan. Or, more applicable here, Jack Higgins: Sean Dillon

After reading "Tengu, The MonuntainGoblin" John Donohue was on my list of authors to read. His writing style is to the point with out leaving the reader in the dark. The author envelopes you with a quick pace and characters you want to be. His main character is Connor Burke is an Irish-American Samurai with a "bucket list" desire to sample every beer ever brewed. Through out the story Burke's Sensei; Yamashita, imparts his wisdom and guides Burke as to the way of the warrior class.

John Donohue's martial arts thrillers are just the kind of book I want with me on vacation or in the hammock, and "Kage: The Shadow" fit the bill!
