An account of an American hairdresser setting up a school of beauty to aid the women of Afghanistan. This book is an enlightening story of women's plight in Afghanistan (and, that is, not whilst ruled by the Taliban). They cannot express themselves for fear of being beaten by their husbands and they are considered promiscuous if they are out alone or they have no husband and as such become the victim of rape and/or abuse (and it seems without recourse or punishment to the perpetrator(s)). Even though one has to admire Deborah's conviction in helping women in Afghanistan to pursue a goal, these women pursue that goal at the expense of their safety and Deborah has apparently achieved her aim at the expense of being a mother to the two young sons she left back in America.
