Product Description

With the first rays of the rising sun the miners go down so deep into the coal mine that their voices are stifled in the bowels of the earth - Even in their wildest dreams they cannot escape to achieve the reality above ground. When disaster strikes - There are three men who stand up to fight for justice for these labourers who risk their lives as part and parcel of their existence. Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) an ex-naval officer has been court martialed and dismissed from the navy. Vijay is now working at the coal mine. He welcomes every sign of danger and adversity in an attempt to combat the demons within and pay for an act of cowardliness as the captain of a sinking ship. Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) is an engineer in charge of the doomed project, due to the negligence and the greed of its owners. Ravi tries to alert the management and the workers to the impending disaster, but in vain. Ravi joins forces with the workers and Vijay in order to save lives of his fellow workers and fight the establishment. Mangal (Shatrughan Sinha) is a runaway convict who finds shelter from the hands of the law at the coal mine. A boisterous and an egoistic man, who finds that there is a compassionate human being within him and ends up joining the quest for justice. Kaala Patthar is a film about how different people from different walks of life and backgounds come together and show true courage and character to fight the forces of nature in what is a loosing battle.

Product Description

Vijay Pal Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is a disgraced Merchant Navy captain who is branded a coward, humiliated by society and disowned by his parents for abandoning ship risking the lives of over 300 passengers (perhaps inspired by Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim). Feeling guilty over his cowardice and with low self-esteem, he starts working as a coal miner to forget his past. He meets and becomes friends with Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), an engineer incharge of the mine. He also makes an enemy in another co-worker named Mangal (Shatrughan Sinha) who is an escaped criminal working in the mine to avoid the police. Vijay's past comes to haunt him as he sees Mangal causing trouble for the coal miners and angry over his cowardice over what happened when he was in the navy, Vijay tries to defend the miners against Mangal. Ravi eventually gets Vijay and Mangal to be friends after circumstances surrounding the mine force Mangal to change himself. The one person who supports Vijay him in his life is Dr Sudha Sen (Raakhee Gulzar) who tries to make Vijay face up to his past and move on. Ravi and Mangal also get involved in their own romances with Anita (Parveen Babi) and Channo (Neetu Singh) respectively. When Seth Dhanraj (Prem Chopra) makes lives difficult for the coal miners by giving them poor equipment, less than sufficient medical supplies and lack of facilities, Vijay, Ravi and Mangal forcefully come together to fight for justice against Dhanraj when water floods the mines endangering the lives of hundreds of workers. The disaster actually took place at a place called Chasnala in erswhile Bihar (now Jharkhand).

Fantastic film, the ultimate multi starrer with magnificent performances all round, be they the silent suffering Vijay(Amitabh Bachchan), the reformed criminal Mangal(Shatrughan Sinha) or even the confident Dr Sudha(Rakhee). With a stellar star cast right down to Sanjeev Kumar's cameo, and an even bigger story about love, hate, duty, forgiveness and teamwork, This DVD is a must for all fans of cinema!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Performances! 5 April 2011
By Z.B - Published on Amazon.com
This film has an amazingly ambitious story for its time. a story about poorly treated coal mine workers and a deeply powerfull hero destined to a life of pain and suffering for his mistakes in his past. this film boasts some powerfull performances from Amithab Bachan and Shatrugan sinha. Rakhee plays the soulful doctor destined to help the unfortunate wherever they may be thus on of the most famous lines in bollywood history when Rakhee is trying help The injured Amithab. "please why dont you try uderstand" "Pain is my destiny doctor and I can't avoid it!" Shashi kapoor plays the Dashing young romantic engineer together with Parveen Bhabi the news reporter who plays his girlfriend in the film. The story works well on a whole though technically the film leaves a lot to be desired. Though the scenes in the coal mines are well done. The rest is a bit shoddy in places, but some brilliant acting is what takes this film beyond its rather dull appearance. This film comes with a soulful soundtrack that really works well and some fantastic songs to be rememderd forever... they just don't make stories like this anymore.....shame really
