I bought this capture cable to copy video from my Sony HDD/DVD recorder. Setting up is simple, you just plug the component plugs into the line out of your recorder, stick the other end in a USB port and it automatically installs itself.

Although the product I received was slightly different from that advertised (made by 'KWorld' not 'V-Stream' and came with 'ULead DVD Factory 4 SE' not 'Cyberlink PowerProducer 2 Gold') it does exactly the same job and is much cheaper than a similar capture card and doesn't require physical installation into your computer.

The ability to capture live television from your TV effectively turns your computer into a hard drive video recorder, and the supplied software allows for your computer to be turned on and off automatically when a scheduled recording starts and stops.

Capturing video is also straightforward, just press play on your video recorder and 'Start Capture' in Windows Movie Maker.

Also, with a little fiddling, one can capture a recorded (or live) programme from the video recorder then convert it to an iPod compatible format (mp4) using free software (Videora iPod Converter) and watch programmes on your iPod as if it was your VCR! Well worth the £30 in my eyes.

In summary, easy to use (even for video novices) and gives good, customisable results.

After deciding it was time to dump all my NTSC (non UK PAL format) VHS and 8mm tapes and deck, I really needed something to get them onto a hard disk (2 x 500GB). Since once the tapes were gone and with some dating back to 1989 with the usually family memories etc., then there was no way I could get them back so I spent a lot of time reading and reviewing products like this one. The result is that I am really satisfied with both the hardware and the bundled software and would strongly recommend it to anyone wishing to do a similar task. The great thing from my own personal perspective is that the tapes I own are not UK PAL system but the NTSC system which means that I needed a device that could convert both PAL and NTSC tapes. This did it perfectly and automatically.

The first 15 minutes or so after plugging it all in were really spent just trying to familiarize myself with the product. At first I could not get a picture with the S-Video cable and then found a setting for it in the Director software. One I had set this, everything worked really well.

The record function can be by time, size or just let it run continuously. For those videos I knew the time of, I set it to record that length of time plus a couple of minutes since the video deck timer was not 100% accurate. For those I was not sure, I just let them run and then trimmed the blank space off afterwards. This was really easy once I had experimented with the software a little. The same for making DVD's. For a 55minute Video, it took real-time of 55mins to record and then just one hour to write as a DVD. Worked brilliantly! A close freind of mine who is a professional videographer was pretty much gob-smacked with the excellent results I could get on a low cost product like this vs the 3,000GBP he had spent on high-end video capture cards. OK, so for him there are features he really needs for his work, but for the average person wishing to move into the digital age and convert their tapes then he agreed that this was a very impressive product and more than worth the money.

The only thing I would recommend if there is problem with the sound, is to make sure you have the right CODEC's in your system. My OS is WinXP Pro and I had a problem with playing back the sound first of all so downloaded the ACE MegaCodecS Pack, which is free online, and this also allowed me to see some other video formats that weren't showing from another era of recording tapes with a first generation Firewire device.

For those that do not seems satisfied with the product, I would recommend taking a bit of time to familiarize themselves with it more and to experiment a little. Basically, it worked a treat for me and so now I have about 70 tapes now converted onto HDD and backed up twice. Great to get rid of all those tapes and the concern that I really had to get this done sooner or later and now the task is well and truly behind me.

Quite simply works to capture all types of TV, VCR to your hard drive via USB 2 conecting by the red, white and yellow composite cables or s-video to the tele or whatever. The audio was good through the 3.5mm line in socket, not so good through the micro-phone socket on my laptop. I could burn a DVD to play else where with the included software "PVR Plus", great!! Also has a time scheduler to set up like a VCR recorder to record your TV programs.
