As a teacher of key stage 3 geography I found this textbook extremely useful, making it a key resource for the classroom. Easy and enjoyable to read (for teachers and pupils)it provides up-to-date information and knowledge with key concepts wonderfully and carefully illustrated. Divided into 114 units (each a double page spread)it provides an in-depth and comphrehensive study of geography at key stage 3. Using a methodical enquiry based approach pupils are encouraged to investigate key themes e.g. the difficulties and major problems faced by Less Economically Developed Countries in relation to development. It includes pictures, diagrams, maps, photographs, quotes from famous people and graphs to highlight points. Short questions for puplils to answer are also included in each unit. At the end of each unit, key words are defined, summaries are provided to help with revision, and it includes summary activities to encourage further investigation. At the end of each page key internet website addresses are provided for pupils to look up.
It also incudes a very useful section on atlas, map, fieldwork and general geographical skills to enable pupils to strenghten these skills e.g. it includes two ordnance survey maps of the Yorkshire Dales and Bury St. Edmunds. Four further internet class activities are provided to develop pupils' ICT skills. Traceable maps are also included along with a comprehensive glossary and key up to date statistics of countries in the world e.g. GDP, HDI and demographic statistics.
It focuses and develops well on peoples' impact on the environment and the world around them, stimulating pupils to think about how people have shaped the world around them.
Easy to use for teachers and pupils it is an excellent text book for key stage 3. It also provides teachers to teach mixed ability groups as well as providing a base for lower ability groups. It's well divided sections enable teachers to select certain units and provide a starting point to introduce new ideas to younger pupils. It provides a very good foundation to build on for GCSE geography. This book brings geography to life in the classroom making it accessible for pupils as well as fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum. A must for every geography classroom.
