CGP produce some really good workbooks, always of a high standard, and this is one of a series
called "SAT Busters" which cover all the various parts of the curriculum your child will need for their Year 6, KS2, SAT exams in both English and Maths. This book covers the important skill of Mental Maths. It is a simple book, in black and white, and makes up in substance what it lacks in style. There are sections on Number Problems, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Mixed Calculations, Doubling and Halving, Rounding and Estimating, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals, Units and Measures, Time, Shapes, Angles, Ratio and Proportion and Algebra. There are also four Practice Tests. The answer sheets are in the book and you can either read the questions aloud from transcripts included in the book or download the audio tests online (details are in the inside cover).

The only reason I have dropped a star from my review, is that the answers are not included. Admittedly, you probably will not need them for this age group and they are included in a separate answer book which covers three workbooks, "KS2 Maths SAT Buster Answer Book (Number, Shape, Measures and Data, Mental Maths)", but it is much easier/quicker to have the answers included and, although the answer book is not expensive, it is still annoying to have to purchase it separately. Overall, though, this contains a lot of questions and covers all the important areas of the maths curriculum on which they will be asked.

I received this free through the Amazon Vine programme

This book is a good thing in helping children to prepare mentally for their Year 6 SATS assessments: it's a simply-presented, relatively inexpensive resource incorporating practice questions targeting set areas as well as four full-length mental arithmetic tests. These allow children to experience questions of the kind with which they might be faced in their real assessments, presented in a similar format with a timed element.

The book does not contain an answer sheet for the specific-area questions(though this isn't a serious problem) and although billed as 'with audio tests' it's worth noting that these are only available through the CGP website, rather than on physical media.

If you have a child that is coming up to the SAT tests in Y6, or even if you just want them to brush up on their mental arithmetic skills, then this book is likely to prove very useful. It's nothing hugely groundbreaking or clever but does exactly what it needs to - providing lots of problems of the sort that are met in the mental maths test in the SATs.

The book has a different section for different types of questions which are comprised of: Number Problems; Addition; Subtraction; Multiplication; Division; Mixed Calculations; Doubling and Halving; Rounding and Estimating; Franctions, Percentages and Decimals; Units and Measures; Time; Shapes, Angles; Ration and Proportion; Algebra. There are then also 4 Practice Tests which are very like the ones that are taken during the SATs. They can either be read out or you can use the online audio files which is a great idea as this is most like what happens during the SATs.

Using this resource should give your child some valuable practice in mental maths and also prepare them for the format of the SATs mental maths test. It should also highlight fairly clearly if there are any areas that require a little more work.

Overall I think that this is a great little book and pretty good value. The only downside of it, for me, is that the answers aren't included and have to be purchased separately if required which is a bit of a pain. Admittedly most people probably won't need the answers, but it would have been nice to have them at the back.

42 pages of KS2 maths questions designed to exercise fast mental arithmetic. This book is full of different types of question grouped by type, where some questions must be answered in 5 seconds, some in 10 seconds, and some in 15 seconds. It is designed to be self-scoring, with a dinosaur theme, from a baby dinosaur just hatching from an egg, through a small wobbly toddler dinosaur to an Arithmosaurus-rex. However, as the answers are not provided anywhere in the book, which is a bit odd, it's not so easy to self-score. For that you need to purchase the KS2 Maths SAT Buster Answer Book, ISBN 978-1847627865, which I think is a bit cheeky and unnecessary, and partly defeats the point of the dinosaur theme, and for that reason alone I can't give this book 5 stars.

However the questions are well laid out and challenging, separated into 15 different sections (Number Problems, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Mixed Calculations, Double and Halving, Rounding and Estimating, Fractions Percentages and Decimals, Units and Measures, Time, Shapes, Angles, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra) and will definitely keep my little one busy for a while.

When the manufacturer's description says "with audio tests", it doesn't mean it comes with a CD or anything like that, it means that you can go to a website to hear the questions from the practice tests being read out. I think that is a bit misleading too, and I was close to taking away another star from my review because of this (but that seemed a bit harsh on my part because the content of the book is sound). Alternatively the questions for the practice tests can be found in the middle of the book and the publishers assume that someone else can be enticed to read them out with a timer to hand, with four practice answer sheets at the back.
