This review is from: KING ARTHUR'S RAMSOM (Flamingo (Series)) (Paperback)
This is a children's novel with a Christian focus. If you don't want to know the plot, skip to the next paragraph. In this slightly revisionist version, 16 year old Arthur, aided by brother 'Cai', has to compete for his kingdom against a warlord and 'Morcanta', his step-sister. There is no 'sword in the stone' etc; if you don't like magic even in myths, you will like this about the book. The narrator, a 15 year old girl who enjoys dressing like a boy and fighting in battles, helps him find a hidden treasure and the books ends happily.
As a conservative Christian, certain elements of the book concern me and this is certainly not a book for young children. Good things: the message is that Jesus is the only way, and not Jesus PLUS the old gods. There is mention of occult objects, but the book is sufficiently vague about their use not to be concerning, and condemns them. But I thought other things brought the tone of the book down - there is copious reference to Stinker, the farting dog. Ask a child what they remember about the book - will it be the Christian message, or this charming addition? And at one point, someone is tied up on a pagan altar and very nearly sacrificed.
Other minor points: bad punctuation and a horrible font that jarred all the way through.
There are better reads.
