Product Description

"The gritty and taut KILLING PLATO is 100% unadulterated attitude." --The Singapore Straits Times

Plato Karsarkis was an international celebrity straight out of Vanity Fair until a New York grand jury indicted him for smuggling Iraqi oil and charged him with racketeering and espionage. There was also the matter of a woman he may or may not have murdered to cover it all up. When Karsarkis flees the United States just ahead of the FBI and promptly vanishes, the world's media whips itself into a frenzy.

Jack Shepherd was a politically connected American lawyer until he traded the fierce intrigues of Washington for the quiet life in Bangkok. Then one day he walks into a bar on the jet-set island of Phuket and finds the world's most famous fugitive waiting for him.

Karsarkis wants to hire him. He wants a presidential pardon so he can return to American and he knows Shepherd's connections to the White House just might get it for him. But the U.S. Marshals are in Phuket as well and they want something from Shepherd, too. They're there to kidnap Karsarkis and take him back to the US for trial and the Marshals want Shepherd to help them set a trap.

What Shepherd wants is for everybody to go away and leave him alone. At least he does until he discovers a chilling secret, one that plunges him a violent spiral of friendship and betrayal and pulls him straight back into the life he thought he had left behind in Washington.

The Marshals aren't really in Phuket to arrest Plato Karsarkis. They're there to kill him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fact or Fiction in Thailand 29 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first learnt about Jake Needham via The Big Mango - recommended to me as a definitive introduction to Bangkok. The Jack Shepherd novels develop the theme, drawing on the author's obvious insider knowledge.
Killing Plato is the second of the series, and has Jack once again finding himself in deep over his head in international intrigue. The eponymous Plato is a wanted criminal who is determined to recruit Jack's assistance despite his considerable reluctance and the involvement of various shady organisations, all with their own agendas.
Jack is not a particularly sympathetic protagonist - you probably wouldn't want to meet him in person - but the author's skill has you rooting for him anyway. Mr Needham is also very good at making his fiction so believable that you are left wondering whether he has just taken a real story and changed the names slightly.
This is a must read for anyone who wants to learn more about Thailand than temples and bar girls, and a great thriller to boot!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Read...... 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found out about Jake Needham through an English author that I was 'Twittering' with. He recommended a couple of books and I plumped for 'Killing Plato' and I'm really glad I did. Very well written, great story, the dialogue flows and the main characters are believeable. My guilty secret is that I like Lee Child's books, this book is everything that's good about Reacher, but without the pumped-up testosterone driven sociopathic destruction.....Jack Shepherd could potentially cause as much damage, but with a well timed retort or a witty reposte. Shepherd is a thinking man's Reacher and I look forward to being entertained by the rest of Jake's novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like the Hero 18 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read another one of this authors books and this made me go for this one. Was a bit disappointed. Found it a wee bit disjointed , but blame the fact I left my kindle at a friends and had to go back 2 chapters to catch up again.Characters were not strong, but having said that I have now purchased the next one , which has a superb beginning!

Pacy action and an intelligent plot, a good read. I've given it three stars because it's not outstanding, but certainly very readable.
