Published before the author became famous as a TV personality, this is a complete creative and practical handbook for anyone decorating a house. From the effects of using different colours on our sense of space, and the various ways of treating a wallspace, to the minutae of paint effects and decorative details, it contains anything you might want to know to achieve a period look or create something totally modern and original. Illustrated with great care throughout, using room sets treated in a selection of ways to demonstrate the effects of different ways of treating the surfaces to change our perception of the space.

This isn't one of those books which is basically a series of glossy magazine articles strung together with a little text. McCloud is meticulous about both the theory and the practice of decorating an interior space. You could regard this as the start of an interior designer's education, or buy it simply because you want something really special for your own home. Even if you are a very experienced DIYer, I guarantee you'll find it a stimulating source of new ideas. It is equally suitable if you have a period home but no money, or a bog-standard modern semi that you want to bring to life.

The main topic of this book is the use of paints, pigments and other products to change the appearance of a surface in fairly radical ways, from treating metal to look aged to painting a wall to look like Italian marble. Some of the trompe d'oeuil acheived is remarkable. Many "how to" books today have a limited number of simplistic projects, often insulting the reader's intelligence. This book goes the other way, and some of the effects described are really very technical. However, a huge range of ways of treating surfaces is covered and there is something for everyone from the beginner to the expert.
