Book Description

The idea to travel the world on a motorcycle did not ‘come out of the blue’. Monica’s husband Simon had this dream for 30 years. The opportunity to go arose after their three children had left school and home. Monica had a motorcycle licence but no mechanical skills and very little riding experience. She didn’t even have a motorcycle. At the end of a focussed year of preparation sandwiched between two busy jobs as a social worker she was more or less ready to go. The original plan was to ride from Tokyo, Japan to St. Petersburg, Russia via Mongolia and the Central Asian Republics. The twists and turns of fate saw them return home through Africa, which had never been part of the plan. From the fabled Silk Road route to Timbuktu there was plenty of adventure and challenges. After 50,000kms and through 30 countries Monica missed out on learning how to change a tyre as she didn’t even manage to get a flat. The trip was one of extreme travel and adventure and a wonderful way of spending a year. Monica and Simon managed to return home still married and keen to travel more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to our inner traveller! 9 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a gripping tale of adventure and courage through lands which most of us know only from childhood stories of the mysterious East. It is written simply and movingly and allows the dissolution of the inevitable barrier between author and reader. Her writing lets us feel it is ourself stepping off our motorbike before the gates of Samarkand. It is an inspiration for readers of any age, reminding us that such high adventure is still possible in today's society for any of us with the will to step forth into the unknown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep Moving 6 Jan. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book because it captured the flavour of travelling independantly and on the cheap as is mostly done only by young people. It had an element of "winging it", without having too much forward planning, and at each point they went with the flow, which seems to me the best way to experience new places. It is inspiring to see that age and sex need not hold you back. It also covered areas of the world not often written about - I particularly enjoyed the African portion of their travels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aussie Girl keeps moving with the big boys RTW 18 July 2013

If your a female and inexperienced touring motorcyclist, wondering if you can ride around the world, with a bunch of Rowdy RiffRaff men then wonder no more. Keep moving is a great page turning read from one women's point of view learning the in's and out's of motorcycle touring and keeping up with her more experienced men motorcycle riders. This lady rider enjoys the historic buildings along her journey and gradually master's the physical stress and strain of motorcycling around the world. Her journey follows the unpaved and paved routes through Russia, Mongolia, the Stans, Africa and the more pleasant routes through Europe.

The journey is my destination. Clyde

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep Moving ...Fabulous! 17 May 2013

This is such a page turner with every chapter a personal insight into some of the world's least travelled and known countries. I am now inspired to get off the beaten track and get exploring. BTW if age was ever going to be an excuse then reading this will challenge any 'can't do' attitudes! KEEP MOVING: Tokyo to Cape Town by Motorbike

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an enjoyable read 7 Aug. 2013

What a great book, so cleverly written. I felt that I had entered into the world of a motor bike rider and got to understand why someone would choose such a mode of travel! The story line was gripping and had me itching to pick up the book as soon as possible again to find out what happened next. The descriptions of each place provided enough information to be informative (I learned so much!) and interesting but not too much that they became boring. The reflections on life and the people provided great food for thought. The stories of border crossings and brushes with authority were quite shocking. I found this a truly satisfying read.

A great read. I felt like I was part of the adventure. Loved the African leg of the tale. I have never had a desire to travel there but this book has changed my view. Cant wait to read the book on the writers next trip.
