Was looking for constuction toys for my 7 year old who loves building stuff and came across Kapla in an american review of the top 10 construction toys. I had never heard of it and so was more than a little nervous about shelling out £80 for 280 bits of wood but was intrigued by the rather fabulous temple printed on the very smart storage box that you could presumably build. So muttering, 'sucker' under my breath I pressed check out and waited. The box arrived a couple of days later and half an hour after that I can attest we are Kapla addicted. By we, I mean a 2.5, 7(and two friends) 13, 16, 45 and 48 year old. It's not clear from the image, but the red 'lid' is actually a book of designs that can all be built with the bricks in the box. There is also another booklet in the box with more basic contruction formats. What they don't make clear is how quickly your building, camel, or chair rises off the kitchen table and how solid it is once built - it's not a case of ,'don't even breath on it' type warnings. You spend about 20 minutes with the tactile smooth wood bricks and get no end of oohs and ahhs. Whats really great is that you don't have to follow the image completely for it to work, there's plenty of room for your own twists (or mistakes). I think because it doesnt take long to build, the children seem to positively relish dismantling it and trying something even more complicated. It is a truly wonderous idea. The blurb talks about it being relevant to architects and I had scoffed at that as sales talk, but I can now see how it would be. You can build anything - cantilevered bridges, pagodas, swiss chalets, helixes, domes, spires, cats, people ... anything you can imagine with these miniture 2" x 4"s ... I am going to now quietly whisper it, but one week in I have just ordered the 1,000 piece box (with the really cool coasters to wheel it round) and the kids and I have already cleared a space in the living room where we are going to build a 5ft rocket..

Kapla blocks were top of my daughter's birthday list this year. I'd never heard of it but she knows it from school. I was doubtful at first, but it's amazing fun. It comes with a picture book of building suggestions. Now that we have a set, we all love it! My 6-year-old daughter still makes relatively simple constructions but my husband and son take great delight in building more challenging ones. Even I, usually not into this sort of thing, quite like it, because it's relaxing and creative (not step by step, like Lego) and the sample constructions in the book, once built, are visually quite stunning.

This is a wonderful toy which I bought as a Christmas present in 2010 for my three children ( boy aged 6 and twin girls aged ). In the last 2 years, this has provided endless of hours of entertainment. Although they do not have the attention span to replicate any of the creations in the book, they have spent hours making their own towers, houses, farm building, dolls houses, car parks, racing tracks and marble runs - the simplicity of the blocks really encourages them to be creative!

When we have friends over with children of varying ages, we often find that when the Kapla comes out, everyone is on their hands and knees making something - even Mums and Dads! This is a toy that entices participation from all people of all ages.

Although when I first purchased the Kapla, I did think it was quite expensive - however, two years on, I can now see that it is excellent value for money. Whereas other toys (mostly battery operated or character toys) have come and gone, Kapla still holds their attention. I can envision my children will be playing with this for many years to come.

I have finally got round to writing a review as my children were playing with it at the weekend, and they were lamenting that 280 blocks were not enough! It is now on their list for Christmas 2012! I would recommend that you buy the biggest box you can afford.
