Book Description

Review by SCI-FI-LONDON:

(...) Loton uses them all to great effect - fresh enough to hook you in, but then garnished with enough of his own brand of slick writing style and black humour to keep you reading till the end.

(...)

Kai-Me-Rah is really nicely written. The characters, Turo especially, are well rounded and the wry one-liners are laced with a terrific gallows humour. The plot is different enough to keep you interested and the central reveal about Turo, when it comes, is deftly handled and as unexpected as it is inevitable.

(...) But this time I can happily report a novel that stands head and shoulders above the morass of self-published novels out there and I'll happily recommend it.

Synopsis

In a gritty future dystopia, Turo is the world’s most lethal bounty hunter. This tough-as-nails mercenary survives on a toxic mix of booze, deadly narcotics, sexy women – and his gift for snuffing out human life.

His only friends are the quasi-dictator who runs the city, a local drug dealer, and the artificial intelligence system in his flying car.

And Turo has other big problems: He’s spent most of his life as an orphan with no memory of his father and only a silver chain and ring to remind him of the mother he briefly knew.

But when a deranged military commando from his family’s past returns to exact revenge on Turo and the city he calls home, this tortured soul must confront the dark secrets of his own history and the genetic engineering experiments responsible for his superhuman powers.

Can Turo stop this madman in time to save his city – and himself? Will he learn the dark secrets that shaped his desperate existence? Does he even care enough to try?

In his stunning debut novel, London writer Steven Loton redefines postmodern storytelling with his gift for exposing dark truths and human pain. This dystopian, cyberpunk, action packed thrilling sci-fi adventure of a novel will have you laughing out loud with great comedy value and witty lines. In the vein of masters like Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut, Loton weaves a white-knuckle tale of death, destruction… and the ultimate redeeming power of love and romance that can save us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars it is not like any other book I have ever read 5 Aug. 2014
By GJ Hll
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I felt compelled to write a review for Kai-Me-Rah..it is not normally something I do, but in this case I am hoping it will help me to understand my thoughts a bit more.
Why am I not clear? Simple..it is not like any other book I have ever read, and I mean that in the most positive of ways.

Kai-Me-Rah breaks every rule in the book (no pun intended), it is set out as a 'sci-fi' but to restrict it to this genre almost seems criminal. What Steven Loton does is not give two hoots about what has come before, he makes sure the book focuses on some absolutely brilliantly realized characters, the prime one is the books anti-hero Turo, on the surface a well trodden downbeat character who has special 'abilities' but has never reached the heights you feel perhaps he should. But again; nothing is conventional - Turo cannot be put into a b ox, there are complexities to him that seem subtle and not over explained (like so many other books). Also the relationship between Turo and the object of his suppressed love Maria..may just be one of the most realistically constructed, and beautifully simplistic love stories i have read.

What makes it all so great? As mentioned Loton does not care about constructing a futuristic world that highly tuned geeks could roam around in forever, what he does care about is pure expressionism, he writes with his balls out (metaphorically...i hope) throughout the whole novel his prose are at once funny, tough and bittersweet. I found the whole style utterly addictive and have downloaded his book of shorts already.

I can't recommend this enough, completely unconventional, completely engrossing, completely unique...completely Loton. Watch out for him, i will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast moving cyberpunk from a Brit again!!! 10 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very fast moving cyber punk world of drugs, drink, women and killing, Truro the hero is a contract killer with a complex and sometimes confusing world to deal with!
I found the opening chapter to be mesmerizing, and full of the essence of cyberpunk including bodily enhancements, lots of good prose, often funny but very well written.
"Not you shipwreck" was how a drunk rejected the attentions of an unattractive girl, and I hope To remember that, and have the guts to say it, if I find myself in the right situation
After the opening frenzy where Truro wins through to fight another day, Logon allows the story to resume a more narrative pace which is easier to follow. Then the complex but straight line story unfollds and more cyberpunk is revealed. It is fascinating how Truro finds out that he actually has fully functional wings in his back, but so easily done that the credibility of the story is not compromised.
This book is a stimulating read that grabs you from the start, and I can't wait for KAI-2 which is apparently in the wings!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, average writing 1 Dec. 2014

I downloaded this book because I am a great fan of dystopian sci-fi, and saw the many 5 stars review the book had. I have to say I was very disappointed. The basis of the story is good, but the characters are very one-dimensional, predictable and a lot of it falls into the "caricature" category. The dialogues are also very common-place and I'm not really keen on the story being narrated in the first person by the main character, with the constant use of "I". I'll still give it 3 stars because as I said, the story is not that bad, but the writing could have been a lot better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read. Bit of editing needed 30 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great storyline that kept me hooked until the very last page. Personally I found some of the writing niaive in places with a certain disregard for physics (why would a laser-missile have a rocket style flame) and the overuse of terms like "fly-car" (yes we get it, cars can fly in the future) sometimes jarred you out of the story line. BUT, the actual story is a compelling and emmersive piece of scifi.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRING ON KAI-ME-RAH 2 31 Oct. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a massive SCI-FI fan but I must admit I have never read anything quite as unique as KAI-ME-RAH. The main character Turo is cool, funny, disobedient, and brooding.

The story is exciting and moves at a breakneck pace. It is jammed with wise cracks, awesome lines and some of the catchiest dialogue you will ever read.

Can’t wait for the next book, if there is one? Mr Loton?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, nearly there. 1 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A page-turner. Easy to read, super-hero stuff.

Pity about the grammar errors which are unacceptable when you can Google correct spellings etc. "Gaumless" - I don't think so!

Still, I'll read the sequel.
