22nd May 2012
I know that this review must seem as it goes on forever BUT, Freelander went in today for it's MOT which it passed: obviously nothing to do with k-seal, but it has got a clean bill of health again and onwards into another year of motoring. I hope that by placing a regular update that some of you will see that for SOME of us, this product works. The longest journey remains a 25 mile return trip each Saturday, but the car is used daily and touch wood, the coolant level remains unchanged from my March update.
24th April 2012 Update
On Saturday I gave my Freelander a small service -just oil change and a check of the fluid levels. No surprise that I have not lost any coolant and the oil came out of the sump without a trace of coolant in it, suggesting that there has been no transfer of oil into the coolant or vice versa. I now look forward to my Freelander going for its MOT and providing that it passes, the potential for another year of motoring thanks to k-seal. I continue to appreciate the reviews of those who this product has not achieved a repair for, but for me and my relative low usage Freelander, it has kept us on the road for a further four months and two years in total and shows no sign of letting me down. I have no intention of taking it on a long trip to try it out though and a 25 mile trip each Saturday is the longest that I am ever likely to undertake in one go, but I can now advise that K-seal has seen me through a further 470 miles since my March update and almost 9,000 miles since I poured in the first bottle two years ago. The third bottle still sits in my glove compartment just in case though and every time I lift the bonnet I dread the thought of the expansion tank being empty and having to pour it in, but so far, every time I look not a drop has gone.
11th March 2012 update
Still going strong! I went into my local LandRover garage last week for a new set of HT leads and a King cable and whilst I was there, I spoke to the guy that runs it. We discussed k-seal. He had a problem with his Mark 1 rangerover when in France: a leak from the heater matrix. WHat did he reach for? K-seal - got him around France and back so that he could fix it properly: his only adverse comment was that it had really made a mess of his thermostat, which he replaced easily (nothing compared to replacing or repairing the heating matrix). It worked for him on that occasion and for almost two years has worked for me. Since I added the last lot of k-seal I have covered a further 1500 miles, all short journeys admittedly, but my Freelander keeps going and whilst I appreciate what others say about it will not fix a head gasket, the car on my drive is living proof. I can only reiterate once again, if you have a low value car with nothing to lose other than loads of money to repair it, which is worth more than the value of the car, throw the k-seal in and give it a try - it might not work for you, as it obviously hasn't for some, but for me, it is the dogs!
My Review
I first purchased this item when I noticed that the coolant on my 1.8 litre petrol freelander was dropping very quickly. Having purchased the vehicle for £1000 from ebay and familiar with the history of the K series engine, this came as no surprise. The cylinder head gasket had obviously gone as there was emulsion in the oil. What were the options? Cylinder head gasket repair and possible replace the warped head or k-seal. For the money what could I lose? I note that some people had critiscised the product for leaving sludge in the coolant, but let's be honest, it is a sub 10 quid product as opposed to a £1000+ garage repair.
Straight off I poured it in the coolant tank, topped up with coolant, ran the engine and it seemed to have stopped the leak. Sadly the same thing happened and so K-seal had failed, but please read on......I cover 80 miles a week in this freelander, always short journeys to take my dogs for their daily walk. But more importantly, I feel that you should be aware of, is that this repair lasted for 18 months and 6,000 miles before the leak came back!
Faced with the same situation, what could I do. I sent off to Amazon for another bottle of K-seal, which with express delivery cost me £15.00: it arrived the next day, 23rd December in the Christmas rush, poured it in and now on the 17th February I can report that I have not lost any coolant and almost 900 miles further on, my freelander is still running fine. I check the coolant each week just in case, but it is fine.
Would I use this product on a newish car? Probably not, but my freelander is w reg, is notorious for this type of problem and what did I have to lose? K-seal has now given me an additional 7,000 miles of motoring, it has covered the inside of my expansion tank with beige sludge, but this is an old car and I would suspect most of the people who use this product aren't tipping it into the radiator of a Merc or BMW just out of warranty.
You get what you pay for and if like me you have an old car and the repair just isn't worth the trouble, the expense or if you are mechanically proficient to the degree of repairing it yourself, the time. Great product and I am so confident that it will keep me going I have just ordered another bottle, just in case it fails again. Even if it only saw me through another 500 miles, it might see me through to the next MOT!
