K-Pax IV: A New Visitor from the Constellation Lyra

For fans of Brewers' work this is an absolute must as an addition to KPAX's I, II & III.
For readers unfamiliar with Brewers work this is STILL a absolute must. Okay, I am slightly biaised in having being a ufologist for sometime but my own love of Brewers' work aside - the book is still a winner.
Meet Fled, a large hairy visitor from the planet KPAX - the same as Prot, who features in the first three books. Fled is different from Prot however, she's beligerent, sarcastic, lacks patience, manners, and thinks nothing of offering, or engaging in sex with any male she encounters! As the story of why she is visiting our meagre planet unfolds, so do the methods of psychology used by her psychiatrist to determine whether she is from afar, or just mentally ill. Throughout the book you find yourself actually in the office during therapy, wandering around the gardens of the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute, and indeed on the wards with the other patients.
If you read nothing else on Science Fiction this fall, read KPAX IV.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 4 Aug 2009
By Mr. Iain Sinclair (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having devoured and thoroughly enjoyed the K-PAX Trilogy, I was sadly disappointed by this book.

Unlike the Trilogy about prot (where the reader is drawn into the fundamental question - is prot a mental patient or is he really a visitor from a distant world?) K-PAX IV introduces the new character, fled. From the outset fled is beyond question alien. Resembling a talking chimp, she openly displays her ability to travel on a beam of light. No ifs, no buts, no doubts about it, fled is from K-PAX. Having accepted this, I read on only to find that the same format as the Trilogy is adopted by the author.. hypnotising fled to reveal any "alters", introducing fled to the author's family members, offering bowls of veg (only a slight deviation from prot's penchant for fruit), and describing fled's interactions with mental patients. In my opinion the reader is left with an overwhelming sense of deja-vu. The fled character is only slightly different from prot, apart from the facts that she's female and resembles a large chimp, and the plot is so similar to the Trilogy that it leaves the reader disappointed. As a light (very light) read K-PAX IV is ok. I remain a great fan of Gene Brewer's work. However I strongly recommend that readers buy the Trilogy rather than IV.
