K-Pax is yet another excellent film that stars Kevin Spacey. The basic premise of the film is a man called Prot, who claims to be from the planet K-Pax, ends up in a psychiatric hospital and Jeff Bridges's character, Prot's psychiatrist Mark, has a battle to reveal Prot's true identity before he returns to K-Pax. Prot, though, is extremely convincing and Mark begins to wonder about the reality of the situation.
Whilst the idea of life from another planet is not a new subject to be explored by films, K-Pax approaches it from a unique perspective. The film is genuinely suspenseful, and it is one of the rare films that is so well scripted that I did not see the "twist" coming at all. The film proceeds at a good pace, whilst still exploring all the issues in depth. The end is truly moving and memorable.
Kevin Spacey is once again superb in this film. He was originally offered the role of Mark, but turned it down as when he read the script it was Prot he set his heart on playing. It is easy to see why, as he really is a wonderful character and one which of all actors out there Spacey was born to play. He is very convincing as Prot and makes the character wholly believable. He builds up Prot's disturbance masterfully throughout the film and interacts brilliantly with the other characters. He also manages to force down a whole banana (skin and all - Prot loves fruit), which really is dedication to the part! Jeff Bridges is also excellent as the psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with Prot. The exchanges between the two central characters are the best parts of the film, which is funny, moving and inspirational all in one. The two actors work extremely well together.
K-Pax really is a beautiful film.

How K-Pax slipped relatively quietly through cinema release will remain a mystery. And mystery is what the film is all about.
Kevin Spacey is mesmeric in his performance as 'Prot', a mental hospital patient who just may be what he says he is - a visitor from the planet K-PAX.
Jeff Bridges brings his usual multi-layers of depth to the role of Prot's psychiatrist. Seeing these two top-draw character actors complement each other is a rare treat.
But without great material, actors cannot perform - and thankfully, the script is witty, intelligent, thought-provoking and full of warmth. It's the kind of film made for a sunny winter's sunday afternoon, with a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits. And plenty of time to fall headlong into Prot's world.
The DDVD package is pretty decent - the alternate ending shows how good the choices the director made were. Cast interviews are a little happy clappy, but director Iain softley's commentary is as intelligent as the movie itself.
It's a great film, and really deserves very wide recognition.

I watched this on television last night and found it one of the most uplifting films I have seen in recent times, and possibly ever. A deeply philosophical and often metaphorical work, superbly performed by the entire cast. Kevin Spacey is a revelation in this film, and I would agree that Jeff Bridges has never been better.
I don't feel that the story is open ended, as there are many clues (some more subtle than others) as to the truth about who/what Prot actually is. I won't spoil things by saying any more here, but if you missed the point first time round, have another look at it and take note of Prot's explanations and jokes about himself when being interview by the Doctor early on in the film, and what he says with regard to the photo of Robert Porter, near the end.
To sum up: If you haven't seen this film, you don't know what you're missing! If you have and didn't understand it - please watch it again! If you don't like it, then I guess no film can please everybody. Personally, I'd give it a galaxy of stars (sorry, couldn't resist it). Simply brilliant.

As soon as I knew about this film I wanted to see it. I remember leaving the cinema and hearing people say "what was that all about...I didn't get it!" This film is whatever you want it to be - it is original, though-provoking, mysterious and mature. The acting is excellent and the characters believable(!) This is a film for people who like being encouraged to think - it is a film that requires attention & questions (you cannot be spoon-fed the answers). This is a complex, in-depth story (with a variety of chatracters) that makes sense if you let it. It made sense to me and I enjoyed being given the evidence but being allowed to make up my own mind. It has beliefs, morals and a good view of our world and humanity. There is alot to learn from this film (which, although not as detailed as the book, is better that the book for mystery and realism). I loved this film from the start (even the music is excellent); it is a slow, unfolding mystery that manages to install different emotions and feelings within the audience. You don't have to like Sci-Fi to enjoy this film - there is something for everyone in it, and alot to learn and think about. This provoking film is one that will stay with you for a long time after seeing it and is even better the second time. Don't expect a clear-cut outcome to this film - what you believe is up to you....
