Coddled by their priveliged and wealthy upbringing, 12 year old twins Thor and Rai lives soon take a turn for the worst when they discover their parents murdered bodies and are then sent off to the prison planet of Chimera. Alone and defenceless on a carniverous and hostile planet the only way to survive is to revert to beast-like tactics, hence the world's nickname: Jyu Oh Sei, which, when translated means 'Planet of the Beast King'. The only way off the planet is to become the Beast King. Only the strong survive when the plant-life can devour people whole and the inhabitants are all the worst criminals, not to mention the erratic weather patterns of 181 consecutive days of light and intense heat and 181 days of artic-like night.
Jyu Oh Sei is a series that I did not have real high expectations for, seeing as it came into this country under the anime radar and it only lasts for 11 episodes. However, this has to be one of the best recent sci-fi adventure animes I have seen. From the adrenaline soaked first frames which sees the terrified twins chased by hordes of barbaric criminals while trying to avoid the carniverous plant life, the setting and the visual scope of this series is instantly likeable and is beautifully imagined. Due to the low number of episodes, each one has been made so there is plenty of plot lines and cliffhangers crammed in; with the addition of great action and interesting character development. Jyu Oh Sei is a series that began strongly and ended on a relatively high note. The series is split in half, the first half seeing the prtagonist as kids and the concluding part seeing them as teenagers and adults. While the second half is weaker in comparison to the first set of episodes, the series as a whole is still an entertaining experience.
Unfortunately there aren't that many special features on offer here. Just some trailers and a commentary for episode 6. On these discs there is a choice of whther to watch the series in it's original Japanese language or in the English dub. Personally, I preferred the dub. The voice actress for the twins (Alison Viktorin) does a superb job of portraying her characters and does well in some of the emotional scenes. As an adult, Thor by Sean Michael Teague who is probably best known for playing Koenma in Yu Yu Hakusho. This accompanied by some other great voices make Jyu Oh Sei a series well worth wathcing in English.
If you are a fan of action, adventure anime and drama then you might enjoy Jyu Oh Sei. The episodes are so well put together that they will seem to fly by. Even though this anime is relatively shortlived, it is still worth the money as it is truly a great anime experience.
