Product Description

Product Description

The need for a laboratory and field manual to assist with the evaluation of juvenile skeletal material is long overdue. This resource is essential for the practising osteoarchaeologist and forensic anthropologist who requires a quick, reliable and easy-to-use reference to aid in the identification, siding and aging of juvenile osseous material. While excellent reference books on juvenile osteology are currently available, no pre-existing source adequately fills this particular niche in the market. This field manual is designed with practicality as its primary directive. Descriptions of each bone contain: morphological characteristics useful for identification, other elements with which the bone may be confused, tips for siding, illustrations of varying developmental phases, data useful for ageing, and a summary of developmental timings. Concise, bullet-style descriptions assist with quick retrieval of information.Unique to this manual is the presentation of data collected from a variety of populations, utilizing a range of observational methods, as an alternative to providing one overall aging summary that is derived from a compilation of many individual sources. This manual provides a host of data on a variety of populations to enable the user to select the reference most applicable to their needs. The final chapter combines information from each bone to provide a summary of developmental changes occurring at different life stages to act as an immediate 'ready reckoner' for the knowledgeable practitioner. It also provides forms useful for documenting juvenile material and diagrams to help with the recognition of commingled juvenile remains. The manual is a must for anyone responsible for the evaluation of juvenile osseous material through dry bone assessment, radiographs, sonograms, and or CT scans. This title identifies every component of the developing skeleton. It also provides detailed analysis of juvenile skeletal remains and the development of bone as a tissue. It summarizes key morphological stages in the development of every bone. It also provides data on a variety of populations to enable the user to select the reference most applicable to their needs. It focuses on practicality, with direct, bullet style descriptions. It also provides forms for documenting juvenile material and diagrams to help with the recognition of commingled juvenile remains. Its final chapter provides summary of developmental changes occurring at different life stages to act as an immediate 'ready reckoner' for the practitioner.

Good field reference 1 Sep 2011

Format:Spiral-bound
I have used this as a reference for identification in the field. It is the best such reference for infant and child remains that I have found to-date since most of the illustrations are very detailed.
Fantastic resource for the field 23 Feb 2011

Like the print edition of this manual, the Kindle edition is packed with useful information for any archaeologist or biological anthropologist working with juvenile remains. The fact that it now can be read on a portable electronic device makes it perfect for bringing into the field. There are, however, a couple problems. First, there are no page numbers, meaning that if you need to reference this manual, you will have to refer back to a print edition. Kindle is phasing in page numbers, so let's hope this changes. Also, the formatting of the tables can be somewhat difficult to decipher at first, but it doesn't take long to get used to.
Best book so far 24 Dec 2009

This book has useful pictures for identification of juvenile bones. In case only a single bone is found, metric age estimation methods are easily understood from pictures. This is a good book for the beginners in juvenile anatomy as well as a good reference book for all researchers in the field. Also skeletal recording forms look useful, as they present three subadult age categories compared to usual two. Two are not always enough, hopefully three will be. Summaries of epiphyseal closure times in the end of the book will make it easier to do the work faster.

However, I have struggled with the identification of epiphyses at even an earlier state of formation as presented in this book, when they still all look pretty much the same, rounded, just a few millimeters in breath. Therefore I hope the next book will still present even earlier states of epiphyseal formation. However so far this is the best book about Juvenile osteology to use in laboratory work. Thank you for this helpful and simple to use reference book!
