Season 3 of Justified picks up where season 2 left off with Raylan recovering from a gunshot wound after the shoot-out at the Bennett homestead. The power vacuum which that has left amongst the Harlan County criminal fraternity becomes the principle dynamo for this season of Justified. Into this comes an unsettling arrival from Detroit, Bobby Quarles (Neal McDonagh), with new plans for the Oxy trade. The series also introduces the sinister figure of Ellstin Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson), a pig farmer and an underworld banker, the latter role which puts him in a pivotal position in Harlan county crime circles. Amidst all of this Raylan and Boyd continue their semi-amiable but lethal feud, united now also in comparable ill-intent towards Dickie Bennett.

Unfortunately even two memorable villians played by actors as fine as McDonagh and Williamson don't quite fill the absence of Margo Martindale's terrifying Mags Bennett from season 2. Still the whole ensemble does its best and produces another fine series of one of the best tv programmes currently in production in the English speaking world. It remains funny, violent, occassionally shocking and intensely literate television. It is masterful work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season Three - Slow Burn 1 Jan 2013
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
As you can see Amazon have mixed up all 'Justified's reviews. This is for season 3.

Season 2 set a very high bar, not just for 'Justified' but for television in general. US Marshal Raylan Givens found himself up against a family even tougher than season 1's Crowders in the shape of the holler dwellin', moonshine swiggin' drug running Bennets. As the truly terrifying matriarch Mags Bennet Margo Martindale gave a powerhouse performance that overshadowed all else and that elevated an enjoyable series into a great one.

Her demise meant that season three needed something pretty special to even begin to come close. Did it manage it? Well in truth no. A new family was introduced with Mykelti Williamson showing a nice line in menace as the leader of a group of misfits fighting their corner. Ellstin Limehouse, a pig farmer with a neat collection of blades of all sorts and an assorted collection of supporters, was a nice addition but it just felt that the menace he presented was held in check throughout until in the end his toothy grin and thousand yard stare wasn't enough to produce the same level of fear as the mere smile of the monstrous Mags.

Not so though for Neal McDonough as the increasingly unhinged Robert Quarles. A mob employee trying to buy his way back into his boss' favour after an earlier 'misdemeanour'. By the time we find out just what that misdemeanour was we are all to aware that Quarles is as mad as a sack of hungry squirrels.
McDonough, (Having done sterling work in Desperate housewives & band of brothers) does a nice line in snappy suit wearing, mad blue eyed fruitcakes but as this series advances his character descends into the realms of cartoon madness and threatens to undermine everything around him.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're playing Harlan Roulette. 15 May 2012
By NicolaA
The best season yet!
Raylan is getting over a gunshot injury and is now with Winona, in the first episode we see Desmond Harrington (AKA Quinn, Dexter) he plays a Dixie Mafia bodyguard.
Boyd once again is outstanding in this season, although doesn't shine quite as brightly in previous seasons he and Ava's relationship is now strong and Ava is stepping up to the plate. Arlo is also back, his and Raylans relationship is as strained as ever.

We have some new characters Limehouse who is an associate of the Bennett clan, Mags had entrusted him with all her ill-gotten 3.2 million dollars of stashed money. Limehouse hides her money, and even after her death in accordance their deal will only let Dickie have it. quite a lot of time is devoted to trying to figure out just where Limehouse has hidden the money. Dickie is in prison and has to find a way to escape, leading to episode 5 which my favourite Justified episode to date, where somehow Dewey Crowe ends up in a race against time to collect money for a organ harvester leading to one of the best quotes ever...

We also meet new character Robert Quarles, a Dixie Mafia lieutenant who wants repayment of a loan. Quarles is a nasty piece of work with a drink and drug addiction not to mention his appetite for sadistic tendency's towards young men.

The final scene of this season is really quite sad. and having being commissioned for a 4th season it will be interesting to see how Raylan deals with his relationship with Winona and that of his father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone's after Raylan 18 Dec 2013
By Mr. R. W. Graham VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Picking up where season 2 left off with the death of Mags Bennett and everyone after her missing money including son Dickie and an exiled gangster from Detroit season 3 sees marshall Raylan Givens trying to stop the crime wave in Harlan County and constantly running into onetime childhood friend now adversary Boyd Crowder who is trying to control crime in the area and add in a mystery man called Limehouse and Raylan's father and everyone is coming after Raylan in season 3. Very underrated show with plenty of tension and humour as marshall Givens who acts like a 19th century cowboy in the present day brings his own style of justice. Very good cast but it's Timothy Olyphant as Raylan's show all the way.

The acting and photography are superb. It is escapism at it's best. Tautly written scripts with stories that show a shadow of the "old west". Read more
