Al is one of those persons that you cannot put a label on. From the small folk clubs to a powerful stadium stage act with electric guitars, keyboards, saxaphones etc. Al has been there, done it - all in his own inimitable style. This boxed selection covers the full story of Al's development from his early love songs through to his historical epics and ditties regarding fine wines, trains and clocks!! As a lyricist, Al is second to none. In an age when the rock musicians were writing "Love you baby", Al was producing epics about the prophesies of Nostadamus, the German WW2 approach to Moscow, the developing effects of trains throughout history (Might not sound like much, but it's a classic)The groundbreaking platinum selling 'Year Of The Cat'album was the one that made all those hard years of graft in the folk clubs bear fruit. The title track is a classic with 'On The Border' another singles release bringing that distinctive accoustic quality (provided by a virtuoso input from Peter White)together with the soft rock backing and the unmistakable vocal style of Al. Tracks like the upbeat 'Song on the Radio' 'Running Man' 'King of Portugal' and the amusing 'Red Toupee' mixed with the softer songs such as 'Almost Lucy' will give the listener the urge to look further into the work of this musical genius. This boxed set is a launch pad into a magical world of quality and enjoyment. The followers of Al Stewart's music are a very fortunate and astute group. In a world of very ordinary and limited talents, they have found the very best. When they listen to an Al Stewart song, they listen to a literary classic, the quality is always there - buy this boxed set and join the enlightened ones!!

Al is the master of lyrics, and this Boxset is a great collection of his work along with a chronology of his work over 4 decades. Though Al Stewart became famous due to his platinum records Year of the Cat and Time Passeges, he already had behind him a long list of songs, and a well established style where the emphasis of his music is more on the Lyrics.
Listening to his latest release A Beach Full Of Shells you come to realize how much more Al has to offer and his music is as fresh as the first album released by him 38 years ago.
The sombre tone of Turn into earth from his first release in 1967 to Gina in the Kings road in 2005 shows how Al has matured like great red wine. There are still a lot of unrealesed music available through Neville Judd website who runs the Al Stewart merchandise store.
This latest boxset and ABeach full of shells is a musthave for any Al Stewart fan and anyone who has heard Year of the Cat. A very satisfying experience, I give 5 stars to this latest Boxset released by EMI.Thankyou very much Al. When is your next album due ? It seems you've only just begun.

'Year of the Cat' is arguably one of the most beautiful songs ever written, with the perfect marriage of music and lyrics, but Al had so many other great songs, with such a wide range of expression and styles. His music is at once intelligent and accessible. This 5 CD set is extremely enjoyable, especially the 5th 'Live CD' which sounds amazing. If you were to tell someone it was a recording from 2013 (with today's technology) no one would question. Whoever engineered it was brilliant, and it captures Al at his 'full band' finest. It seems like Al Stewart is a name that you don't hear much anymore when discussing great music, at least in the USA. But listening to "Time Passages' I get the feeling that Al would simply smile and muse about the ephemeral nature of art, and life itself. What a great legacy.

I have been an Al Stewart fan for over thirty years and althought this is a long overdue retrospective there is simply not enough here to satisfy the long term fans. Four of the five CDs are made up of previously released studio recordings which most fans probably already own. When it comes to retrospectives EMI should take a leaf out of Free Reed's book. The new Richard Thompson release contains almost entirely previously unreleased material and is really worth the investment. I'm sorry, I love Al Stewart's work and if you are a newcomer it is certainly worth the asking price, but for us older fans it's asking too much for too little new material.
