Product Description

Product Description

These readings by Kenneth Williams from his autobiography were first broadcast on Radio 4 in 1985. They incorporate his 1930s childhood in London, barrack-room life in Singapore during the last months of World War II, his stage career in the 1950s and 1960s, and radio and cinema fame. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Kenneth Williams was one of the great institutions of British entertainment. For nearly forty years his inimitable performances on stage, screen and radio delighted audiences around the world, and his autobiography recalls the most memorable moments from this time.

Barrack-room life in Singapore, post-war repertory, his roles in revue and on the London stage of the fifties and sixties, his famous cameos in great radio shows such as 'Hancock's Half Hour', 'Round the Horne' and 'Just a Minute', his friendships with people such as Ingrid Bergman, Maggie Smith, Orson Welles, Noel Coward, Joe Orton, Stanley Baxter and Gordon Jackson – all these are described with his special brand of humour and intelligence.

"Fascinating… amiable, intelligent, and full of good stories"
JOHN LAHR, 'TLS'

"Exceptionally well written… laughs to be had in plenty"
PAUL BAILEY, 'Observer'

Stop Messing About 20 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Kenneth Williams a truly brilliant man,the book is very well written as you would expect from such an articulate man.The stories are very interesting and well told,if i am honest i was expecting more from our Kens Autobiography, maybe more of his darker side to be revealed. But if you want that there is always the brilliant Diaries, but this is more about his working relationships more than anything else..Still very enjoyable though..

This is a wonderful evocation of the life of the unique KW. It is an essential complement to his letters and diaries. For anyone interested in KW and/or the UK entertainment industry from Ensa through to the Carry Ons, this is simply unmissable. Highly readable

An addictive - but one sided account - of Williams life
A wonderful read - even though I don't usually read autobiographies. You get the impression that there is a lot more to his life that wasn't revealed. Read more
