I remember reading a whole lot of books in the William series when I was about 12 or 13 during the summer holidays. I remember not putting down these books for days on end and just getting totally mesmerized by the antics and adventures of William, the Outlaws and other supporting characters. I remember cycling to the local lending library to hunt for other William books and taking as much as I could. Recently I downloaded the Just William and More William books for my Android phone through the Kindle app. It was pure nostalgia and I read through them fondly. I tried reading some other books that I loved as a kid and I could barely get through the first few pages. But the William books and their wit and humor are timeless. Even my wife found them highly entertaining and constantly flipping through them when she gets some down time.
Now that I'm much older, I realize how clever Richmal Crompton's writings are and how colorful and wonderfully fleshed out all characters are. What's more amazing is that I just found out the author is a woman and its incredible how precisely and vividly she has portrayed what run's through the minds of 11 year old boys. The rough and rowdy lead character of the 11 year old William is much more nuanced than I realized with a big heart and great sense of morality. Almost like a modern day Bart Simpson but with a greater set of morals, thirst for adventure, exploration and a wild imagination. The subtle social commentary and satire about the author's time, outrageous but believable adventures of William, the different levels of humor which should please both adults and kids makes me believe that these books are far superior to the 'dumbed-down' version of children's books available nowadays. Now that I have a baby girl of my own, I can't wait to read to her about William and the Outlaws when she is older. The language might be a bit high brow for small children with British slang and some dry wit, but that shouldn't stop parents and I'm sure these will create opportunities for parents to discuss vocabulary while enjoying the witty humor and adventures of William with their children. Happy reading!
