This Etta James compilation covers some of her Chess tunes (she recorded with no less than six record labels during her career).
Overall, it is a good overview of her career, definitely capturing her at her peak vocally.
All of these tunes appear on other CDs/albums, but it is a nice mix nevertheless. Her entire debut album, "At Last" appears here as well (including the extra bonus tracks that appeared on the 1999 CD re-issue for a total of 14 tracks). The remaining 9 tracks are culled from her 1961 albums entitled "The Second Time Around" and "Etta James".
There is the mix of tenderly sung love songs and her characteristic "bad-girl" growl tunes. Harmonious and melodic background singers are prominent as was the norm in the 1960s
Note the composition and performance collaboration with Harvey Fuqua and Willie Dixon. They are stellar.
This is a fine offering of three of her early Chess recording. It is by no means complete, but it is a worthy sampling of her music and a cost effective way to get nearly three albums worth of Etta James songs.
