3.0 out of 5 stars Stolen Goods 5 Mar 2010
By Mulwharchar TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I don't know whether 70s mod revivalists The Crooks named themselves as a nod towards their wholesale theft of The Jam's sound, but if so it was the only honest thing they did. 'Just Released' is by no means unconvincing as pastiche goes, and the singer's Paul Weller impersonation would certainly fool the casual listener, but ultimately it's rather pointless as The Jam did it better, and always will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stolen goods?? Someone hasn't got a clue!!!! 18 May 2014

the crooks - just released has stood the test of time well, not a straight ahead mod band, but was adopted by that scene for their decent tunes,
the reviewer slating them for sounding like the jam really has no clue, this band did do a version of the jam's b'side - see-saw, which isn't on this release but that is the only link to the jam, this band had their own sound,
they do a brilliant take on the small faces - understanding
this band should have been bigger, but they broke up in 1980 while the mod revival was still gaining momentum

A classic Mod album from the late 70's revival. These records will have you singing in the shower from the excellent 'Beat Goes On' to the melodic 'Hold Me'. If your into Mod music this is a must buy CD, from an excellent but underrated band. They could of been bigger if not splitting up in 1980 and surely had more to offer as this album shows. Musically they are similar to The Lambrettas and The Circles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretenders to the Mod Revival Throne? 25 Jun 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Ok, it is 1979 and the Who film Quadrophenia has just been released and Britain is in the throws of a major MOD (2nd) revival. The Jam, around since 1976, are in the lead and certainly the most well known output of the day. A flurry of pub rockers turned modsters followed, but The Crooks certainly had the leg up on all the rest! Most likely you never got to hear this band. The Crooks could write songs and not merely ape the current mod trend. "Just Released," is their one and only long player and it is well worth seeking out this new CD release on Captain Oi. I rate them much better than all the rest of the mod-pack of the day. This release has aged better than Secret Affair or The Chords.
This CD has their full 1980 album and single bonus tracks for good measure. I would have liked Captain Oi to start giving us better (i.e, more in-depth) essays on the bands - but I praise them for giving us a chance to hear the MODERN BOYS once again.
