CD Description

* The third of Ace's limited edition releases.

* Here's something to thrill all fans of tough, female new breed R&B - the first ever CD reissue of the complete Federal recordings of Tiny Topsy and Lula Reed.

* Both of these artists are revered by New Breeders all over the world for their uncompromsingly tough Federal sides - virtually none of which have been legitimately digitised up to now.

* Produced in Chicago in the late 1950s and early 1960s by the great Sonny Thompson (Mr Lula Reed) and featuring the same musicians who appear on all of Freddy King's great records of the period, this is phenomenally exciting music that has stood the test of time well. As a bonus Freddy King appears in duet with Ms Reed on four of the tracks.

* As an encapsulation of the Chicago black music scene in the years between rockin' rhythm & blues and early soul, this collection has few peers. Here are two tough and sassy ladies that you wouldn't want to mess with, on a collection of tracks that you wouldn't want not to own.

* Strictly limited edition.

Rare Early Soul/R&B From King Records 23 Aug 2010
By Kenneth - Published on Amazon.com
All lovers of the King/Federal/Deluxe family of labels from Cincinnati and its legendary boss Syd Nathan owe a deep debt of gratitude to the UK Ace Records label. They have been almost single handedly responsible for bringing out at least two dozen CDs of rare and hard to find King material which only the hardest working (and deep pocketed) collectors could have bought on their own. The Tiny Topsy and Lula Reed is in Ace's Limited Edition Series, whose previous volumes have included The Royaltones (an early Detroit outfit which featured Dennis Coffey) and The Satintones, the early unsung first group signing on the Motown label.

Most King collectors are familiar with Lula Reed, as she was fairly well connected in the company, being married to label mate band leader and producer Sonny Thompson, and having recorded some great sides with Blues great Freddy King. But Lula Reed, whose single style and tonal qualities somewhat resembles Dinah Washington, never achieved the fame predicted for her.

Aside from a name in a discography, I had never heard of Tiny Topsy. Like the James Brown warm up act TV Mama, Tiny Topsy was a big woman in a short frame who was a true blues shouter. The Ace writer of the liner notes dug up an old article from the time of Topsy's death in the early 1960s to publish what little is known about her even today, adding to the mystique.

As to the material, this is a thoroughly enjoyable CD. Topsy's material can be somewhat gimmicky ("Western Rock 'n Roll") at times, so a few tracks lack originality, but her tracks are more than worth the price of admission on their own. She was a great singer, unheralded, who after 12 recorded sides was dropped by King due to lack of sales. After that, she lived out her short life (she died in her early 30s), singing in Chicago clubs. But what a voice. Similar in style to Big Maybelle, she attacks every song full on, unsubtle but mighty. I love her in-your-face raw style.

The Lula Reed selections are not everything she recorded for the company (these are the Federal sides, but she also recorded for the parent King label), but they have never sounded better. Looking back, it's amazing how much talent was housed in the King label, how important Syd Nathan was to early R&B. Even when the material is derivative, the singers are unbeatable.

I strongly urge any lovers of early, raw R&B, or King label collectors, to snap this up while you can at a reasonable price. And kudos once again to the Ace label for all they have done to resurrect so many great tracks from the King and Federal vaults!
