Why so underrated? 3 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
Shelby is an enormous talent there is not many singers that can hold a candle to her both lyrically and vocally. She wrings out more heartfelt emotion with her voice and lyrically she is head and shoulders above nearly every other female singer song writer out there. So my conundrum is why is she not massive, critically she receives good plaudits and she has a very loyal fan base but it seems like the best things in life she is always going to be an acquired taste.
Just a Little lovin' is a gem of a record. Shelby's take on the Dusty Springfield songbook is sublime. She sings in an understated manor allowing the pureness of her voice and beautiful intonation to come to the fore.
The opener 'Just a little lovin'' is a stripped down slow burning opener. Next is "Anyone who had a heart" sang in a melancholy way. Then there is a great acappella start to "You don't have to say you love me" again you can feel the emotion coming through the voice. "I only want to be with you" is given a bossa nova styled backdrop. "The look of love" has a crystal clear vocal delivery. "Breakfast in bed" is my favourite track at this moment there is a desperation in her delivery both sultry and sleazy in equal measure."Willie and Laura Mae Jones" is the only up tempo track taking Shelby back to her country roots that would have sat well on her previous two records. "I don't want to hear it anymore" is again a great vocal. "Pretend" is Shelby's own composition typically Shelby "Hurt me one more night. Just pretend you love me" "If you would change you're devil mind. I'll even let you be more unkind if you want to" the song is all about pain and the thought of loneliness . "How can I be sure" again stripped down to allow the emotion of the voice to come through. It ends with the bonus track "Wishin' and hopin'" slightly up tempo countrified finnish to the record.
The producer Phil Ramone allows it to be all about the voice and Shelby takes on the Dusty Springfield songbook in an understated melancholy way showing she has a natural instinct on how to convey emotion it shows less can be worth more. Let's hope through this record she will start to get the recognition she deserves and we do not have to wait too long for some new material.

By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I was very surprised when I first heard about this album at the time of its release. I knew that Shelby had great taste in music, but I hadn't seen Dusty listed among her influences or favorite singers, so her choice of Dusty surprised me, though I was very pleased too as I'm a huge Dusty fan. My second surprise came with the track listing. I thought maybe Shelby would go mostly for the early stuff, perhaps including some of the earlier country/folk songs that Dusty recorded as lead singer of the Springfields. But no, it was the Dusty in Memphis album that impressed Shelby and made her a Dusty fan; that album accounts for about half of Shelby`s selections for this album. So while some of Dusty's early solo material is represented, no Springfields tracks are covered. Finally, Shelby surprised me by the way she chose to cover Dusty's songs.

Very different from Dusty's original versions, Shelby has opted for a starker interpretation, which is difficult to classify but I suppose it could be described as bluesy folk. Because of my financial situation, I didn't buy the album until I found it at a suitably discounted price. Ironically, when I saw it at such a price, it was in a store that was having its own financial problems. By the time I bought the album, I knew exactly what to expect as I'd listened to several tracks on the internet. If you are familiar with Dusty's music but you haven't heard anything from this album, I'd advise you to listen to samples. I expect there are some fans of Dusty's music who will love this album as I do, while others will hate it.

Two of Dusty's most famous songs (You don't have to say you love me, I only want to be with you) are included; the former actually originated as an Italian ballad. Shelby also included the famous Anyone who had a heart, though this was not a hit for Dusty anywhere as far as I know. It was an American hit for Dionne Warwick, a British hit for Cilla Black and a French hit (with translated lyrics) for Petula Clark. Dusty's version is brilliant and at least as good as the hit versions. Among the other songs is one song, Pretend, that Shelby wrote especially for this album and it, too, is brilliant.

By choosing to do radical re-interpretations rather than faithful cover versions, Shelby has created a real masterpiece that can only enhance Dusty`s legacy. Indeed, I know of at least one Shelby Lynne fan who bought and enjoyed some of Dusty's music (who otherwise would not have done so) after playing this album several times. It is a pity that Dusty didn't live long enough to hear Shelby's tribute.

Shelby shivers 12 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
This is a gorgeous late night listening homage to Dusty. It is so laid back it could be accused of falling over.
But although the pace doesn't vary the love for the songs is evident. And in taking the pace down a notch or nine Shelby has done something different with these classic songs that possibly the great Diva Dusty herself would have enjoyed...and she was a notoriously tough cookie to please. If you like "torch" this is Irresistible. Goosebumps.
