Book Description

12 Aug 2004
This book takes you on a culinary tour of British comfort eating from nursery staples to school canteen classics, from inside the officers mess to City dining rooms. Tom Norrington-Davies asks why we all love the recipes we grew up with, why comfort food has become synonymous with junk food and what we can learn from days gone by. There is corn beef hash sticky toffee pudding, cottage pie, macaroni cheese, eggy bread, welsh rarebit, kedgeree, kippers, toad-in-the-hole, lemon curd, spotted dick and many more mouth-watering recipes that will make you feel ten and a half again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - for the 'foodie' or the beginner. 11 Dec 2004
By Angela VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
What a wonderful cook book!
This book is full of what used to be known as "nursery food", purely for comfort eating, but in the pages of this book, we learn very early not to sit in judgement. Just because the food does not originate at some isolated Italian Mediteranean location doesn't mean that it's 'bad' or 'junk'. In fact, good British food was always crying out for a champion and this book does the job admirably.
Eat Welsh Rabbit, Lancashire Hotpot or beef and ale casserole and eat it with relish! It's how we should have been brought up to eat and it's GOOD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipes you can't find anywhere else 11 Mar 2014
By CC
Format:Paperback
I knew there was a bread pudding that wasn't a 'bread and butter pudding' and that wasn't loaded with eggs (yuck), one that my mother used to make, and here I found it, in this unassuming but essential book. My copy is all splodged and cracked down the spine, it is the most used on my shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really wonderful book 29 April 2013
Format:Hardcover
I live in Japan. I have had this book for a few years, and would read it for a burst of nostalgia every now and then. A Chinese family came to lunch yesterday and had asked for typical real English food! I did the mushroom soup from this book and it was truly perfection. After that we had the cottage pie. I followed the recipe exactly, as my cottage pie has morphed into a rather hybrid creation over the years. It turned out as I remembered.

You will find almost everything you had growing up. I only missed meat pies and suet crust pastry.
