Back in 80s Britain, funk more or less split into two genres. One was the more more commercial, glossy discofied version produced by the likes of Linx, Beggar and Co, Light of the World and Freez. Much more interesting was what became tagged as industrial funk, avant funk or alternative funk with outfits like Shriekback, A Certain Ratio, Pigbag and possibly best of the lot 23 Skidoo. Essentially, 23 Skidoo take classic funk turn it into breakbeat - light years ahead of The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim etc - and mix in a wide range of other influences e.g. gamelan from Indonesia. For newbies this double CD is more accessible than the albums proper as the focus is on the more dancefloor friendly grooves and excludes the more experimental, industrial edged ambient stuff found on the 'The Culling is coming'. If you're interested to know where the likes of the Chemical Brothers and their ilk got their inspiration check this out. To appreciate how original and ahead of their time these boys were just remember that at the same time the charts were awash with synth pop band, New Romantics and glossy US pop-rock.
