The Power of LiteracyWhat a great pleasure to come to Amazon.com and find comments from readers. Thank you so much, all of you, for the time you take to thoughtfully remark on the books you've read. In view of your comments I thought you'd like to know a little about JUST JUICE. This book, written during this glorious Newbery year, is filled with the radiance and warm embraces I have felt throughout 1998. JUST JUICE has more to do with reading and its impact than any of my other books. In JUST JUICE you will meet a family as economically challenged as any I have created. But they are, perhaps, the most intact family as well, except for one, very important factor. Illiteracy. The inability to read has become a complicated family secret, and the acquisition of the ability to read, becomes the first and foremost key to achieving a sustainable quality of life. The entire book is about the power of literacy and the power of family. I am as proud of Juice Faulstich as I've been of any of my young, determined, feisty, independent, free-thinking, protagonists. I hope when you read JUST JUICE, you will feel as if you are sharing the light you have so generously showered upon me this year. Best wishes to you all, Karen Hesse
