Product Description

Pannett, the James Herriot of policing, tiptoes his way through domestic issues, stag nights, and sword-wielding madmen bent on decapitation and tells his tales with warmth and humour. (Daily Express on You're Coming With Me Lad)

Move over James Herriot and Gervase Phinn - there is a new name on the North Yorkshire literary block. (York Press)

Think 21st-century Heartbeat meets James Herriot with the occasional white-knuckle ride of The Sweeney throw in. All delivered with a Yorkshire twang. (The Telegraph)

'After years in the Metropolitan Police, on the beat in central London, Mike Pannett is hoping for a quieter life when he moves back to his home county, Yorkshire. But crime lurks amid the hills and dales, moors, villages and towns and he finds some of the policing tactics he's learned in London come in very useful. More tales from this Yorkshire bobby, who is building a loyal collection of fans with his engaging books.' (Choice Magazine)

Product Description

After ten years with the Metropolitan Police, Mike has returned to his North Yorkshire roots. Working a rural beat in God's Own Country he finds that life and crime in the countryside continue to throw up fresh challenges. When a drug dealer targets the towns and villages of Ryedale, Mike launches an investigation that will uncover nationwide connections. News of a proposed ban on hunting with dogs raises hackles amongst his friends and contacts, threatening to put him in the firing line. And, as he starts working towards his sergeant's exams, there's trouble on the home front. The roof at Keeper's Cottage springs a leak during a thunderstorm - and they have to share their love-nest with the builder. But none of this matches the drama of the anti-hunt demo which threatens to stop a train bringing a local MP to town. With horseman racing alongside the steam engine, and a protester lying on the tracks, Mike has to call on all his resources to handle an inflammatory situation with the media looking on.

More About the Author

Mike Pannett was born in York, and joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988. He became one of the youngest officers to be given his own patch, and served on the Divisional Crime Squad, Murder Squad and TSG (Riot Police).

He transferred to North Yorkshire police in 1997 as he missed the countryside - and fly fishing! He became a rural beat officer and eventually, a wildlife officer. In 2005 he starred in the BBC's Country Cops and was inspired to write about his adventures in the North Yorks force.

Mike served nearly twenty years in the police, during which he became one of the highest commended officers. Following the UK riots in 2011 he has become a key spokesman on current policing issues in the UK, giving extensive interviews on national UK radio and television. He lives with his wife Ann, who is still a serving police officer, and their three children in a small village in the shadow of the North Yorkshire moors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better 25 July 2011
Having waited for nearly a year for Mikes new book, it landed on Saturday. I spent the whole w/end reading it, and did very little else. I can honestly say, this is even better than the last one. I loved the whole balance of the book. Parts made me cry, other parts made me cry again...but with laughter. The crime aspect is in parts hard hitting, and the fatal accident is depicted with honesty and compassion. I also love the romantic side of the book (how beautiful) I can put my hand on my heart and say, this is the best series of books I have ever had the pleasure to read. I hope the author get's the recognition he deserves. I also hope that the books are turned into drama because they have it all. I am gutted I have finished reading the book, because it will be along wait till the next. I am interested to find out how many more books there will be, and if there will be books from his Met police days. I can't recommend these books highly enough, and I have read all my life. Fantastic, and thank you to the publishers for taking the books on. ALFDevon

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect policing! 16 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As usual it has been a worthwhile wait for the next instalment of Mike's policing journey through the lanes and villages of North Yorkshire. There are some great fast paced adventures and very realistically told as well.Having enjoyed my own career as a rural police officer I can assure you that they are accurately and honestly portrayed.Whilst carrying out his role as acting sargeant Mike finds himself first on the scene of a fatal road accident. He tells it how it is and how the situation effects him and his officers who have to deal with the resulting carnage. Some of his narrative matches my very own experiences to a tee.Like the three previous books this is up there with them.If you want to know what it is like to be a rural bobby then this is the series of books for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have to read these books! 18 Aug 2011
By DeniseL
I only discovered Mike Pannett by chance when I called into a Tesco store earlier this year....there he was promoting his 3 books (Just the Job Lad had not yet been released). I had a little look and was informed by a lady, that was clearly a fan of Mike's already, that his books were brilliant. After speaking to Mike himself about the books and the recommendation from the lady I indeed bought book number 1 - Now Then Lad... I have not looked back! I have just completed reading Just The Job Lad - what a brilliant book. The way that the characters come alive in the stories is amazing - I actually feel like I now know everyone in the books! So much so I would absolutely love to meet the people that the characters are based on - what a variety (Walt, Algy, Soapy, Ann to name but a few).
Just The Job Lad is a complete mixture of stories - I particularly like the humour throughout but one part that really grabbed me was the incident of a collision Mike had to deal with whilst acting as Sergeant. It is so interesting reading about the procedures and techniques but these are always combined with real emotion from Mike - he really has been through it.
I can't recommend Mike's books highly enough - and particularly this one.
Just like I listened to the lady in Tesco - take it from me - you really need to buy these books! And after all-word of mouth is the best form of advertising!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cup of tea lad? 12 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Stumbled across this book and I've since bought the first three so that I can read Mike Pannett's whole story. I like the way he tells the stories and reading Mike's obvious joy in the rural landscape and wildlife in it. There are some great characters in his region which are sadly mostly of times gone by. I want to be there having a cuppa with Walt and gathering information! He writes with great humour, but with sensitivity on the tougher topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really glad I read it 28 Sep 2011
By Wyn
I ordered the previous book while still seeing a (now ex) girlfriend. She is very passionate about them and recommended them to me. We had parted before it arrived so I couldn't bear to read it as it reminded me of her. However, recently I was so desperate for a good read that I had another go and shot through the book. I then ordered this book and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The books seem to get better and better whereas some (Jack Sheffield) can get a bit samey. Having been stationed in Yorkshire I can relate to many of the places and that also helps.

Another excellent read and like my ex I can't wait for the next one to pre-order.
