5.0 out of 5 stars Future Personal Development Classic, 2 Jan 2010

This review is from: Just Get On With It!: A Caring, Compassionate Kick Up the Ass! (Paperback)
Just Get On With It ticks all the right boxes to become a future personal development classic. It's well-written, motivational, inspiring, entertaining and accessible. As other reviewers have already noted, Campbell's voice is strongly present throughout the prose, which gives the sense that you are receiving a personal coaching session by one of the best in the business. His use of personal anecdotes results in entertaining metaphors, which are then explained and deconstructed in order to teach readers how to stop sabotaging themselves and their potential. My particular favourite chapters which demonstrate this technique are 'Do You Have a Gay Boyfriend, Too?' and 'Are You a Duck on the M6?'

What I also appreciated was Campbell's use of contemporary context; the credit crunch and its effect on the motivational malaise of 2009 is touched upon, making this book a must-read for all those seeking a 2010 brimming with positive change.

5.0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense useful self-help book? Good grief!, 6 Jan 2010

This review is from: Just Get On With It!: A Caring, Compassionate Kick Up the Ass! (Paperback)
I have read many coaching and self-help books, and many are not really worth the effort. Ali Campbell's book, however, has a very different flavour to it. It is perhaps peculiarly British, and that is a compliment. I enjoyed the style of writing, the anecdotes, and examples from case studies. I really loved the allegory of the Duck on the M6, and actually would love to know where those services are, they sound like fun! I felt that Ali Campbell was truly interested in helping his readers, and that, although the message is not entirely new (what is?), he presnts it in an accessible form that will appeal to many. He combines exactly the right mixture of no-nonsense advice with the spiritual side of goal-setting and motivation that is so much more than more than the touchy-feely message in some books that are internationally renowned. The question "If you didn't know any better, what would you do now?" is a tour de force. It frees up the mind to come up with strategies and ideas. Great job, highly recommended.
