Book Description

6 Jan 1994

Every July, the lucky owners of Cornish holiday homes set off for their annual break. Loading their estate cars with dogs, cats, casefuls of wine, difficult adolescents and rebellious toddlers, they close up their desirable semis in smartish London suburbs - having turned off the Aga and turned on the burglar alarm - and look forward to a carefree, restful, somehow more fulfilling summer.

Clare is, this year, more than usually ready for her holiday. Her teenage daughter, Miranda, has been behaving strangely; her husband, Jack, is harbouring unsettling thoughts of a change in lifestyle; her small children are being particularly tiresome; and she herself is contemplating a bit of extra-marital adventure, possibly with Eliot, the successful - although undeniably heavy-drinking and overweight - author in the adjoining holiday property. Meanwhile Andrew, the only son of elderly parents, is determined that this will be the summer when he will seduce Jessica, Eliot's nubile daughter. But Jessica spends her time in girl-talk with Miranda, while Milo, her handsome brother with whom Andrew longs to be friends, seems more interested in going sailing with the young blond son of the club commodore.

Unexpected disasters occur, revelations are made and, as the summer ends, real life will never be quite the same again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, light harted and easy reading. 27 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Judy Astley has done it again! Just for the summer is all about the family holidays that we have all experienced at one point in our lives. Set in Cornwall the story tells of a families 6 week school holiday at their second home. It involves teenage romances, wild parties and some major flirting on behalf of the main character.A light harted and witty, easy reading book. Well worth a read!

I'm not going to call this book outright `chick-lit' because some people misinterpret that to mean that this is just a piece of mindless fluff, when this book is actually so much more than that. This is a funny, entertaining read and came as a pleasant surprise to me as a first time Astley reader. I can guarantee that this won't be the last book I read by her- this was a real revelation with brilliantly developed characters and a steady plot that had me quickly turning the pages. The very first sentence in particular was a real attention grabber: "Miranda, age sixteen and never been more than kissed was getting pregnant on the beach..."

The story focuses around three individual families and their offspring, who own permanent holiday homes in beautiful Cornwall. There's fusspot Clare, whose teenage daughter used to confide in her about everything but is suddenly shunning her and behaving secretly; Clare's husband Jack who wants to give up their London lifestyle and make a permanent move down south, and their other young kids. Next door we have heavy drinking author Elliot and his young wife Liz, who is thinking of trading up Liz for another model. Finally, we have Archie and Celia and their sex-obsessed young son Andrew, who is determined that this summer will be the one he finally gets a chance with Elliot's teenage daughter Jessica...

A heart-warming story of love, lust, mishaps and summer fun. I really liked how some escapades of the characters were a bit cringey and you could both dislike and empathise with them, but enjoyed ultimately how everything fitted together nicely. Some characters (Clare in particular) did irritate me a little bit, but she was the backbone to the story and needed to be there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic stuff 10 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
(This is my first ever review!)

What a wonderful book. I picked it up by chance some years ago when I fancied something new to read - and when I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Judy's descriptions of her characters are such that you feel you know them intimately after a page or two, and how she writes about the setting for the novel, Cornwall, makes you feel like you're there.

I adore this book and it has become not just my favourite Judy Astley novel, which it is, but also one of my favourite books. I must have read it at least 20 times and never tire of it...in fact it gets better at every reading as I know what's coming up next, and can't wait to read on! After having read this book I went on to get (nearly) every other novel by Judy Astley...there are a few I've still yet to read but I am working my way round to them.

This is a great book for taking on holiday....treat yourself and buy this book, and curl up somewhere warm and cosy and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A light-hearted and enjoyable summer read. 17 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Lesley: [...]

This book is a real favourite of mine and even though it's not new, I felt it deserved a mention, especially now Christmas is past and we start wondering about where our summer holiday will take us this year. I have both the paperback version, well read, and very dog-eared, and as it's almost fallen apart, I have recently bought it on Kindle.

As you get to know the three main families in this book you can't help but smile as you know that `their' situations are going on all around you in real life. They are all fairly comfortably off, middle class families and although they live reasonably closely to each other in London, they only meet up when they are on holiday. They are the `second homers' as opposed to regular tourists renting cottages/houses and as such are tolerated by the villagers rather than liked. Although they attempt to be part of village life, they really just stick together and bring all of their `up country' snobberies with them.

I love the humour in this book and have giggled away happily even though I've read it several times now. The characters are very `real' and you either love them or hate them! Not many of us have the luxury of spending an entire six weeks away on holiday but these families do and over the course of their summer we see their issues and angst over varying situations all come to a head.

Judy Astley, the author, lives in both London and Cornwall and her knowledge and understanding of both the area and the local cultural differences comes across well and I for one am transported down to Cornwall in my mind very quickly when reading this. It probably helps that I love Cornwall very much and go there often too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably my favourite of all time... 26 Dec 2009
By Annaliz
Format:Paperback
This was the first Judy Astley I read, it is without doubt the best, and I split my sides reading it.
I have lived most of my life in Cornwall, have rubbed shoulders with the set locally referred to as "yellow wellies" (Yachty types for the non-Cornish)and can follow this book to the exact house where each incident in the plot occurs (sorry you'll have to come down and track the exact location down yourself!)
I would actually recommend most of Judy's books, although I haven't read her latest ones, because although the tone darkens as she writes they are all very good and true to life, and she has the exact and deft touch at detailing even the most excruciatingly embarrassing moments with just the right twist of humour, so you realise "oh, I've been there actually, and it probably would have been ridiculous if anyone was sober enough to notice".
It's brilliant escapism and a lot better then the TV soaps...(actually I reach for the off button with those but will always read Judy...)
