Product Description

CD Description

Just for a Day is the debut album by the band Slowdive,
released on September 2, 1991. It was recorded at
Courtyard Studios in Abingdon, Oxfordshire formally
known as Georgetown Studios. The album peaked at #3 in
the UK Indie charts. Upon its release, copies of the album
were labeled with a sticker that read "like a mind altering
substance, without the risk."

Formed when they were mostly in their teens, Slowdive
was initially lumped in with the remainder of the early-
'90s British shoegaze scene; Slowdive's later releases
extended upon the likes of the Cocteau Twins and the
more atmospheric sides of post-punk, and they closed out
their career with an excellent and misunderstood
ambient LP.

Formed in 1990 in Reading, England, Slowdive were one of the groups most representative of the 'shoe-gazer' movement of the 1990s. Their psychedelic rock continued with the philosophy laid down by My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins but they took the music to new ethereal extremes.

'Just For A Day' (1991), is a mature and spectacular work. Few groups have managed to produce music with so much psychological depth. The group's hypnotizing harmonies and soundscapes are like sheets of warm velvet that glide weightlessly over distorted mirrored surfaces that slip into the meshes of the cosmos.

'The Sadman' is perhaps the song that is the most extraterrestrial and surreal. The vocal polyphony of the group reaches a zenith of pure delirium in 'Catch The Breeze', whilst 'Primal' is a mini-concert that exists in a crescendo of echoes and reverberations.

'Erik's Song' is pioneering sounding electronic instrumental whose vivid colours are reminiscent of an abstract painting. A sense of abandonment is evident in 'Celia's Dream' which spirals hypnotic cadences. 'Spanish Air' has a kind of martial melody akin to King Crimson, and both 'Sister Sue' and 'Waves' emerge from the fog of sound for a few seconds to reveal somewhat of a traditional rock song.

With 'Just For A Day', Slowdive have created a mystical symphonic psychedelic sound of beauty. The album is one of the most daring achievements of British rock ever.

This album is in 2 parts. The first disc is the original album, the second disk is basically the 'Blue day' extra cd given away with early copies of the following 'Souvlaki' album, relaesed a few years later around 1994(?)

Anyway, what a treat!Swirling guitars and dreamy vocals from a classic period in British rock;just between the first dance craze of the late 80's and grunge.

A rather psychedilc, swirling vibe to the whole album, which I like to listen to under golden autumn leaves after a pint and a smoke.

Dream away kids............then buy 'Loveless'or 'Isn't Anything' by My Bloody Valentine,or 'Nowhere' by Ride.

An education in a sorely underrated era of British music.

An awe-inspiring first album from this key shoegazing group in a deluxe 2CD re-release 15 July 2011
By Christopher Culver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
JUST FOR A DAY was the debut LP of Slowdive, one of the major bands of the shoegazing scene. Released in 1991, it has all the hallmarks of shoegazing: flangey guitars, ethereal vocals often buried deep in the mix, and careful superposition of guitars instead of overt virtuosity. It has some of the best production values in the genre: on a good stereo system, the proliferating layers of sound are almost overwhelming. But it's also got some unexpected muscle, with the opening "Spanish Air" based on power chords of almost cinematic grandeur. Tthe closer "Primal" wielding dissonant vocal effects, setting Rachel Goswell's electronically treated wail against Neil Halstead's sober delivery. Even though the band members had just turned 20 before recording, JUST FOR A DAY sounds like a very mature effort, maintaining a youthful joie de vivre without juvenile lyrics.

If you like Lush, My Bloody Valentine or Pale Saints, then Slowdive is a must-have addition to your collection. Later Slowdive efforts would have many fine moments, but JUST FOR A DAY is the band's most consistent release.

Anyone who likes this record is likely to become a Slowdive completist. For that reason, this recent re-release of JUST FOR A DAY with a bonus disc is the purchase to make. Here you can hear their first three EPs leading up to JUST FOR A DAY, as well as three songs recorded for a John Peel session on 21 April 1991. While nowhere near as memorable as the songs on the first full-length release, these early efforts are nonetheless interesting. Some of the tracks sound like My Bloody Valentine's approach to shoegazing, while others are ambient explorations that are actually a few years ahead of their time.
Every bit as good as Souvlaki, now with pristine sound 26 Jan 2012

Slowdive's 'Just For a Day' sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of the great "shoegaze" albums of the late 80s/early 90s, but in my opinion it's right up there with Ride's 'Nowhere' and Slowdive's own 'Souvlaki,' which are each just a half-notch below My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless,' imo(as just about everything is).

This album's sonic soundscapes create almost an entire dream world, especially when listening with headphones. The shimmery guitars just tickle some part of the brain, creating an extremely euphoric experience, if you let yourself go and just drift away to wherever it happens to take you. There's nary a weak spot on the entire album, it all just flows so well. The three EP's included with this reissue are every bit as good as the album, with a few tracks, such as "Slowdive" and "Morningrise," featuring guitars that just pierce your skull, similar to the second half of "Primal" from the album. There's just a more intense vibe overall compared to 'Just For A Day.' These EP's are some of my favorite works of Slowdive, but I'm partial to walls and walls of "amps turned to 11" guitars washing over me, so I'm slightly biased.

Whether you already own the original version of this or not, this reissue is well worth spending the extra cash. The newly remastered sound highlights a lot of intricacies that were previously buried in the mix, and the bass and drums have a lot more pop to them. So, if you haven't already, it's time to check out this criminally underrated album. It's absolutely beautiful, from beginning to end.
