4.0 out of 5 stars Shoppe til you drop 5 Dec 2009
By Mulwharchar TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Garage bands were lucky if they recorded a single or two and the few that made LPs often stretched their talents (and the listener's patience) to breaking point; I've certainly had my fingers burnt buying CDs by The Litter, The Shadows of Knight, The Eyes etc which only serve to prove that lightning doesn't strike twice. The Lollipop Shoppe have even further to fall as their blistering 45 'You Must Be A Witch' is a garage grail and one of the top 10 highlights (from 118 tracks) of the definitive 'Nuggets 1' boxset, but I'm relieved to say it wasn't a fluke. 1968's 'Just Colour' was recorded in only one day but despite its demo quality it contains enough flashes of brilliance to stand alongside the single. The wild fuzz guitar leads are still in evidence but the sound owes as much to Love and Dylan as to R&B or acid rock and slower songs such as the anguished 'Don't Close The Door On Me' or the 'Like A Rolling Stone'-alike 'It Ain't How Long' are some of the LP's most effective tracks . If you like The Chocolate Watchband's or The Standells' more pastoral moments then 'Just Colour' is well worth investigating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic of 60's Rock- West Coast Style 1 Mar 2011

If you don't like the way records were mixed to stereo in the 60's (drums and bass right speaker, guitars and singing left and center) then you won't like this. I recommend you buy the other version- The Weeds aka The Lollipop Shoppe- instead. It's been remastered without such a wide stereo soundfield and definitely sounds more modern. Plus the bonus tracks are just as awesome as the original record. But because I love this record so much I HAD to get both. This one has two fantastic bonus songs that are not available on The Weeds cd. These songs are the closest to the group "Love" I have ever heard (I love Love). The thing is Revola stuck to the original mixes, which I think was a great idea. It gives you a better idea of what the original record sounded like, which I somehow missed back in the day. My advice is to first get The Weeds cd. I bet you're gonna want this one too (if you're a fan of 60's psych that is). Don't think twice, it's alright!
4.0 out of 5 stars Lollipop Shoppe - 'Just Colour' (Rev-Ola) 16 April 2012
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Initially saw the light of day in 1968, as this was the psychedelic / garage rock ensemble's sole lp. I thought this band's name looked familiar - for it has a song on the 'Nuggets, First Psychedelic Era - 1965-1968' 4-CD box set. Here, you get the original lp + two bonus songs. Tracks that make this CD reissue a should-have are "You Must Be A Witch" (reminds me of The Seeds), the upbeat "Who'll Red The Will?", the somewhat sappy "It's Only A Reflection", "Don't Look Back", the catchy "It Ain't How Long" (belongs on one of those numerous cool various artists collection) and the awesome "You Don't Give Me No More". Line-up: Fred Cole (The Weeds, Zipper) - vocals, Ron Buzzell (also, a member of The Weeds - obviously, I wasn't aware that most if not all these musicians were in The Weeds) & Ed Bowen - guitars & vocals, Bob Atkins - bass, John The Greek - keyboards, Carl Fortina - accordion and Tim Rockson - drums. Should pull in fans of Music Machine, the previously mentioned Seeds, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and maybe Chocolate Watchband. One thing I wanted to mention about the Lollipop Shoppe's monicker SURE doesn't 'fit' their music. Another over-looked late '60's audio gem.

This Rev-ola disc sounds better than the original UNI LP and I believe it was sourced from a Master tape or perhaps a safety. Highly reccommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE REVIEW? 18 Aug 2009

I USUALLY DONT WRITE A REVIEW UNTIL I OWN THE CD AND LISTEN TO IT TWICE...SOME OF MY PALS HAVE MENTIONED THIS BAND [HI, BUD WEBSTER] AND ARE CURIOUS, AND SINCE NOBODY HAS REVIEWED IT. I WILL SAY A FEW THINGS BASED ON THE 30-SECOND SAMPLES AND ONE SONG I HAVE ON A COMP...I NEVER HAD THE LP SO I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS BECAUSE OF WORD ON THE NET...SO HERE GOES. THE SINGER IN THIS BAND APPEARS TO BE A FAN OF ARTHUR LEE [FROM LOVE] AND SOUNDS A BIT LIKE HIM BUT WITHOUT THE POWER. THE SOUND SEEMS VERY TINNY AND THIN, VERY GARAGE, AND ONLY A FEW OF THE SONGS WERE APPEALING. I SUSPECT THIS BAND COULD SOUND A LOT BETTER WITH A TOUCH OF PRODUCTION, BUT THIS IS THE POOREST SOUND IVE HEARD ON THIS LABEL...AGAIN,JUST SAMPLES, BUT I THINK I WILL PASS......BRITMAN 46
