4.0 out of 5 stars This is not a compilation 26 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Although the title suggets otherwise, this is not a compilation CD. It's the third album from the band, with new material and recorded live. The title refers to the fact that much of the songs are older, as you can check out by buying their compilation of early material 'Preserves/uncanned'. These are the strawbs at their transition from a folk band to folk rock, and this cd should please fans of this style. Indeed, this is the one of the two records the band made with keyboardist Rick Wakeman, and the only one that features a composition of his, that is, for me, maybe his best. Strawbs and David Cousins'fans shouldn't miss his epic 'The antiques suite', as well as rare bonus tracks like 'Forever'

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! 30 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like early Rick Wakeman then this is a must. It is great to hear him formulating his extended keyboard solos that he perfected in the days of Yes. Good electric Strawbs songs mix with acoustic numbers with a full band, well played and the sound is good too. A great mix of tracks and a worthy addition to your Strawbs collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Sadly underrated band. 13 Feb 2013
By Dale
Format:Audio CD
This was the first LP I ever bought and I seem to end up buying a new one every decade or so, I am now on my fourth or even fifth copy, but I am still listening to it.

There is no doubting that it's an acquired taste, but Rick Wakeman's keyboards are astounding, even if they are also a bit self indulgent at times.
Tony Hooper's voice magnificent.
Dave Cousins song writing and unique gravel voice are peerless.
If you like the Strawbs, you must have this album in your collection.
If you are not a Strawbs fan, where have you been for the last 40 years?
