Product Description

Product Description

This title includes four hilarious classic archive episodes of the ever-popular comedy panel game. Just as uproariously funny - and terrifically popular - today as when it first began on BBC Radio 4 in 1967, "Just a Minute" challenges contestants to speak for one minute on a given subject without repetition, hesitation or deviation. Its mix of irreverent fun and ferocious competition has always attracted stellar names from the world of comedy and theatre, all of whom pit their wits - and their wit - against regular players including Kenneth Williams, Paul Merton, Derek Nimmo, Clement Freud and Peter Jones. This title also includes these guests in the four archive programmes: Geraldine Jones, Alfred Marks and Tim Rice. The programmes are from 30 September 1968, 30 March 1977, 22 May 1979 and 25 April 1989.

Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This marvelous radio programme first saw the light
of day on December 22nd 1967. The formula was a simple
one : to talk about a given subject for one minute
without hesitation, deviation or repetition.
Challenges might be upheld or dismissed by chairman
Nicholas Parsons with just cause or on a whim.
Volume seven of 'Just A Classic Minute' delivers four
episodes of one of Auntie Beeb's most engrossing shows.
Mr Parsons chairs them all with gentlemanly good humour.

Stalwarts Kenneth Williams and Clement Freud feature in
the first three recordings ( 30th September 1968, 30th
March 1977 and 22nd May 1979) but are absent from the
25th April 1989 programme. (Mr Williams died in 1988).
Both contributed their inimitable vocal qualities to
the game. Mr Freud's melancholic, world-weary drawl;
Mr Williams his wonderfully high-camp histrionics
(which grew ever more shrill with the passing years!)
Actor Peter Jones is the calm voice of reason in three
episodes. Other guests include : Derek Nimmo, Paul Merton,
Alfred Marks, Geraldine Jones and Tim Rice.

Of the subjects put to the test, listening to Mr Williams
discourse on 'Pompei' for sixty seconds without room or
reason for interruption is one of the recording's many
highlights. 'Parbuckles' (May '79) is spectacularly daft!

In a world gone mad 'Just A Minute' remains one of
life's uncomplicated and most enduring pleasures.

Highly Recommended.

Getting snarkey 21 Sep 2010
By Mr. David C. Halliday TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As usual Kenneth Williams launches forth in word a second style and in this collection he is at his smutty best with double entendre's pinging about all over the place, sniggering and feigning outrage while continually stirring the audience to back him.
Alfred Marks has some great gags as does Peter Jones who praises Clement FReud for his challenges. Freud is at his lugubrious best and is really the one to beat. One noticeable point is Kenneth Williams continual sniping at chairman Nicholas Parsons and indeed the panels as a whole seem to turn on him regularly, especially Derek Nimmo who accuses him of being pompous,(true enough), and at times they goad him to be quite snappy with them.
Paul Merton's debut is here and although his first attempt see's him fail miserably as he stutters over his line but it's amazing how quickly he gets into the groove and is able to stand toe to toe with the other panellists.
All in all this remains great fun, (providing of course it's your cup of tea and slice of Dundee cake), and this release has just a little more edge to it than previous releases and is all the better for it.

If you do not know the premise of "Just a Minute" go to the beeb's website: I'm sure they have a page for this, the longest-running radio show ever.

For those of you younger than 40, and/or who do not know about the history of the show then this is an excellent way of finding out and catching up. When he was still with us Ken Williams was frequently the star of this show and we have, I believe I heard correctly, his first appearance, two consequent outings and one post-Williams episode featuring Paul Merton, who has almost filled his considerable shoes. He starts out rather tentatively but the latter two performances outline why Williams is considered by many to be the all-time master of Just a Minute.

It also serves as a social history tool. As we move from the 60's onward, different attitudes and a sharp decrease in formality can be observed, which is fascinating in its own right.

It goes without saying that it is funny. Although the earlier episodes are harder to relate to they are nonetheless entertaining and the latter episodes are occasinally laugh-out-loud funny.

Well worth having if you have an interest in the show, or to learn about it, or as a way of guaging the changing attitudes of the British public over time.
