I came upon this book purely by accident. This is the second book of a triology by E.Lynn Harris. It is all about the coming to terms with gay life of a young black lawyer . The book grips you and it is difficult to put down so much so that it sent me on a search of the first of the triology 'INVISIBLE LIFE" and finally the last book of the triology 'ABIDE WITH ME'. I think I fell in love with the main character in these books...Raymond Tyler...his struggle with racism & homosexuality and his Christian faith. I read this book twice with a space of a year in between.

This is the first book I have read by Harris. It forced me to challenge some of my views, opinions and question the rationale behind them.
Not sure how this type of book relates to sitiation London. The characters are weak confused with the exception of Kyle, the only person in the novel who actually makes the book worth reading. The revalation in the part 2 of the book sparks interest in an otherwise boring story.

In spite of the above I think the book raises some important issues that need to be brought to the fore and therefore is worth reading.

This is my second book by Mr. Harris and I must say that I am truly impressed. Just As I Am was the perfect sequel to Invisible Life. I could not put it down! Now that I am done, I am on Amazon. com to buy the third book in Harris's trilogy! I did however get a bit irritated at Nicole's color hang-up. I mean, I can understand her pain of being teased as a child but come on, she's all grown up now and an actress and the winner of numerous beauty pagents. Pleeezze!! It was refreshing in a way to know that Jared was not gay and yet had no qualms about he and Ray's friendship. But still a little part of me wanted him to be with Ray! E.Lynn Harris has really opened my eyes to the gay African-American community. I really enjoy reading his work and I just hope that he can write them as fast I can read them!!!

Yet again, Harris hits every note of you're heart strings with a combination sensitivity and reality. Just As I Am forces the reader to become involved with rendering pain of the characters that we have come to love.
As a virgin to E.Lynn Harris- This book would give you an incurable addiction for the beautiful and in depth passion with which these charcters develop.
As a Harris follower I can only say that his novels continue to entrap me........a definate must for everyone!!

"Just As I Am" by E. Lynn Harris is a truly remarkable book, especially for its honest and open portrayel of Black middle-class life with all its complexeties, hang-ups and humor. One of the best and most effecting reads of the last few years for me, I applaud Mr Harris for finally confronting such important issues as color discrimination within the black community, homosexuality, the importance of freinds and family, and the hypocrisy of many so called religious people who instead use their religion as a weapon against other minorities. The characters in Just As I Am may be a bit on the glamorous side, everybody seems to be gorgeous with fabulous bodies, but they speak in a language that rings true. I literally did not want the book to end. Kyle, one the more fascinating of Mr. Harris' creations, provides the heart of this work and the treatment of his death to AIDS is noteworthy for the dignity that he brings to it. I laughed, I cried, I got powerfully! hungry. Peaches sure sounds as if she can burn a few pots! This is definitly a must read and a significant improvement over the very good "Invisible Life."

I can describe this story in a couple of words: silly, shallow, annoying, and entertaining-- for what it's worth. What was clear is how ignorant E.Lynn Harris is as a writer, a man, and a Black man. One thing so blatantly noticeable is how near-White all the characters are! From green and gray eyes, to "peachy" skin, to long straight locks, Harris gives the impression that the majority of Black people don't have brown skin, brown eyes, and kinky hair! Another travesty is how all the (Black) FEMALE characters bawl and wail and cry with the drop of a hat. Harris also feels that it's fine that his main character is the "other man" in hetero relationships (even though he never wants to lie to another woman about his sexuality), and that he's obviously hostile and envious of White men. The author feels there's no need to resolve those feelings. Funny, everything else in this story is resolved-- all into one big syrupy-sweet ending that gave me a toothache. Add this to amateurish prose and boring dialogue, and it is a very good read-- for junior high school students.

A really powerful story, which once you get into you can't put down. Made me look closely at my personal values and question whether I'm really as broadminded as I thought I was. The love scenes both gay and straight were beautiful, not tackey, not crude. I laughed at the funny bits and cried at the sad bits. A well balanced story with oodles of warmth.

Just like Invisible Life, this book's most redeeming quality is its upfront look at homosexuality and the effect it has on not only the individual, but everyone around him (or her). And for a middle-class white mommy, Harris' books have been my personal education on the unique challenges faced by black homosexuals. However, the part I enjoyed most about the book was everything and anything to do with Kyle, best friend to main characters Raymond and Nicole. Kyle's character -- with his biting yet incredibly insightful and honest comments -- made the book fun to read. Quite often I felt for him and his mother more than I did the two main characters! However, in the end I was excited for Raymond and Nicole and was overcome with an almost "giddyness" as I drank in the romance and warm friendships portrayed in the book. It was a slow start (although not quite as slow as Invisible Life), but Harris wrapped me up in his story again for an enjoyable reading experience!!
