'Wonderfully engaging' (POPULAR SCIENCE )

Product Description

In his brilliantly idiosyncratic style, Adam Hart-Davis takes the reader through his day and shows just how much science and technology surrounds us all the time, from the alarm clock that wakes us up to the duvet we go to sleep in. We learn not just about how a modern, radio controlled alarm clock works, but also about the first one ever made - by Ktesibios in Alexandria in the third century BC. Written with all his characteristic enthusiasm, this is a book that will appeal to his many fans and to anyone who simply wants to understand more about our everyday world, and how very different our lives would be if scientists and inventors hadn't at some stage achieved what they did.

This review is from: Just Another Day: The Science and Technology of our Everyday Lives (Hardcover)
The eccentric, enthusiastic Adam Hart - Davis has become a relatively familiar figure on TV screens in recent years, presenting a range of historic and scientific programmes. Here he takes a look at the science that lies all around us in our daily lives.

We all lead very different lives and the technology and science that one person uses to go about their daily life may not be that used by somebody else. To provide some sort of focus for the book, Hart-Davis uses his own life as the template. We get the story behind the famous multi-coloured desert boots he is often seen wearing and a view of two of his two-tone suits.

I found the book fascinating, although there were some very strange inclusions that definitely wouldn't be part of my everyday life, such as a straw urinal in the garden.

I found the details of how to wash and condition long hair correctly invaluable. I've been doing it wrong for decades. Apparently you brush your hair and comb any tangles out before stepping in the shower. You then wash it long, working from the top down, no tangling on the head as in the advertisements. Doing this, my hair was beautifully soft and glossy, and this without expensive shampoos.

There are many other interesting, useful and enjoyable facts within. This would be a great present for anyone interested in scientific trivia. Recommended.
