After a brilliant debut album that showcased his versatility, Sayer drifted closer to the intimate singer-songwriter path that was by 1974 well-trodden. Fortunately, the exceptional quality of no fewer than four songs ensured that this album avoided the dry, mediocre fate of so many similarly-styled recordings. The four are "Train", later re-recorded for a compilation, "Giving It All Away", which Roger Daltrey was to take into the charts, and the hits "One Man Band" and "Long Tall Glasses".
This is a more personal album than the debut, "Silverbird", with the theme of struggle prominent. "Long Tall Glasses" comments on the lengths a tramp will go to to survive, while "One Man Band" relates the lot of the busker. Some of the lesser tracks are ordinary, though on "Telepath" Sayer reveals that he still has the gift of imagination in his delivery.
"Just A Boy" isn't as good as "Silverbird" but it has enough about it to make it a worthwhile purchase.

'Just A Boy' was Leo Sayer's second album, and after his 'uninspiring' debut 'Silver Bird' which had been somewhat of a disappointment to me after the magnificent storming of the singles chart with 'The Show Must Go On' - 'Just A Boy' was a surprisingly much better album, and probably his greatest until 'Endless Flight a few years later.
There's some haunting tracks on this, and the album begins with 'Telepath' which was a fabulous and stunning opening track, followed by 'Train' - just two highlights from a remarkable second album!
Until 'Endless Flight', Sayer's albums were not noted for their number of singles, but this contained his long-awaited and surprising second hit, 'One Man Band' (about the only single I did not like - but was OK for album material) and another: 'Long Tall Glasses' which was more like it!
This album included a fabulous free book containing some great artwork by Leo - this was at a time when music did not often come with any form of hype, promotion or gimmicks to inspire sales, and so was something pretty unique at the time.

"Just a Boy" is a brilliant album that evokes the angst felt by teenage boys in the mid-70s. The themes of loneliness and unrequited love recur throughout the 10 excellent tracks. "When I Came Home This Morning" remains my favourite, but "One Man Band", "Train", "Telepath" and "Giving It All Away" are excellent also. The simplicity of the backing piano, aided by the excellent production (David Courtney and Adam Faith) make this a real pleasure to listen to.
Although I love "Siverbird" and "Another Year", Just a Boy remains my favourite and continues to give me great nostalgic pleasure!
