It is without a doubt one of their top albums to my mind and easily rests at the peak of my mountain of CDs.
The blend of tracks is eclectic; sending the mind reeling through the rain forests and desert regions of this beautiful earth and then dropping the listener into deep space to float through constellation after constellation.
The visual impact is the deeper meaning for me. Powerful musical construction, leading to profound inner vision.
I am invigorated and sedated in equal measure.
You have to try this music for yourselves. If you are a discerning prog-rock head, I know you will fall in love with Ozrics work.
Best track for me - Stretchy - without a doubt! The lead break towards the end is orgasmic in it's reach; grabbing my heart and prompting me to replay the track again and again and again.
More than anything, this album helps me to believe that there is a God out there. Such beauty can only eminate from a higher source.
Not only are they an instrumental band, but they are essentially a band who write and play dance music. Don't let that put you off mind you, it's real music, not just some guy hitting a few buttons and letting a machine do all the work. Now I heard about the band through my love of rock music dating from during from the late 60s through the 70s and into the 80s. Specifically, I heard that Ozric Tentacles were similar to mid 70s Gong. There are certainly a few similarities, mainly in their impressive mix of acoustic and electronic instruments.
This then, is the band's 1993 album Jurrasic Shift. Discounting the tapes during the 80s, this is I believe, the group's 4th actual studio album. Though this is apparently not their best album, it is an incredible selection of material. This particular release of the album comes in a lovely new digipack as part of the Snapper Classics range. But of course, this is a review of the music and not of the packaging, so I'll move swiftly on.
There is some incredible rock guitar work going on here, but not in quite the way the instrument is normally employed. Instead, the guitar sprinkles over a solid base of hard fast powerful drums, and upward-spiraling bubbles of synth tinkling. Think of this as a mixture of space rock fused with dance music and more than a few hints of reggae thrown in. Tracks such as "Feng Shui" bring together a startling number of these diverse elements, creating an incredible modern soundscape. Production is stunning, as it always is with the band.
My favourite track on Jurrasic Shift is "Stretchy", featuring as it does, a couple of memorable classic synth flourishes. Highly reccomended, but probably best for those already initiated in the bizzare world of the Ozric Tentacles.
