Product Description

Product Description

Designed as a fast level bomber and dive-bomber, the twin-engined Ju 88 was a mainstay of theLuftwaffe during the early and middle years of World War II. Disappointing in its first big confrontation - the Battle of Britain - the aircraft came into its own later in other theatres and in other roles, particularly that of nightfighter. The author describes in detail the design, development and operational use of this famous type. Illustrated with many rare archive photographs, this book should be a useful addition to the library of anyone interested in the aircraft and the history of World War II.

About the Author

Ron Mackay's interest in military aviation began during WW2. A working knowledge of German extended his field of study to the Luftwaffe and the field of night fighter operations. This is Ron's second book for Crowood, the first being Messerschmitt Bf 110.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so much about the plane..., 26 Jun 2003
This review is from: Junkers Ju 88 (Crowood Aviation Series) (Hardcover)
Being titled Junkers Ju-88 you would expect the book to go through the development, variants and technology of this magnificent plane in detail. At least I did when I ordered the book.

Instead the book is filled mostly with descriptions of different operations 88's were taking part, going into detail of casualties and victories, and sometimes offering a short description of events of an individual battle. Book also has some quotes from the likes of Peter Stahl (his diaries can also be found in english in Amazon) and nighfighter ace Heinz Roekker. These descriptions are very interesting in themselves, but considering the wide-spread use of Ju-88 on all fronts and limitations posed by printed medium, they mostly just end up skimming the surface and not going into events in great detail.

From technical point of view book is very good, although it doesn't go into great detail here either. Book does contain some mistakes, for example copying the error from Stahls diaries about extraordinary invention acetylene cold starting method for Jumo 211 engines when it is described as a standard starting method in very cold conditions by the Junkers manual. But such errors really are minor, and far apart.

All in all, book is an excellent overview of the pilots, units and operating conditions Ju-88 met during the Second World War. Just don't expect too much in depth analysis of the plane or magnificent drawings á la Black Cross, Red Star, as you will find none. But if you want know how who did what and when, this is propably your top reference. Everything from Battle of France to the radar war over Berlin is included.

4.0 out of 5 stars good background on a hard to find title, 11 July 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Junkers Ju 88 (Crowood Aviation Series) (Hardcover)
It was the first Crowood book that I bought, so I wanted to check it out before I ordered any other of their books. I was unsure what to expect, so I was pleased with what actually arrived. I will definitely buy a couple other titles of theirs, and I would recommend this particular book too.
