5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read, 16 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this novel, which is complex and enthralling. It tells the story of how two people grow together and realise their true feelings for each other. The beginning was really surprising, but one can immediately understand why Alex is attracted to Christy. He is portrayed as a man with a hard exterior, a decent man who has no place for his heart in his well ordered life. You can understand why Christy finds him difficult to get to know and why she still clings to her first love. The scenes of the miners life are well drawn, as are those of the servants, and you can understand why they feel loyalty and love towards their betters. The anti hero is callous and cruel, and really deserved his comeuppance!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding historical novel of life in the coal fields, 19 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This was the first Audrey Howard novel I read and it has been the most outstanding for me. It is an enthralling tale from beginning to end, a book I did not want to put down once I started it and one I wanted to go on forever. The ending had me in suspense and I could not imagine the outcome, but the feeling of oneness the lead characters have with their workers is outstanding, a wanting to share their joys and sorrows and a willingness to help in the bad times as well as the good. I would love to be the owner of this publication and await with anticipation the reprinting of this book. I love all Audrey Howard books and have started my collection, I have read all she has written to date. Truly an outstanding writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A manageable epic, 20 Dec 2007
By Trickle Tree (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Juniper Bush (Paperback)
I read this book a few years ago but still find myself picking it up and reading the highlights. It has a sweeping feel of Gone With The Wind. The characters and dilemmas thrown in their way have a real and believable quality that you can easily loose yourself in.
