About the Author
After some years in the legal profession, Andrew Hammond retrained as a teacher and has taught English for ten years in schools across the south east of England. He has prepared boys and girls for the 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship exams as well as working as a Year 5 class teacher, Year 6 Coordinator, KS3 Coordinator and Head of English and Drama. Andrew is the Head of English and Drama at Copthorne Preparatory School and lives in Surrey with his wife and three young rascals.

This book is aimed at children in Year 3, so in the 7-8 age group. There are three books in the Junior English series by Galore Park, which then lead into the "So you really want to learn English" series for the older child. If you have a child at an independent school and want a book which will follow the same curriculum, if you are home schooling and want an English book with more depth than most on the market, or if you are already thinking of that all important 11+ exam and a selective grammar school, then this is the book for you.
The book has ten chapters, but is split into various activities. As well as good, in depth comprehension exercises, it covers subjects such as nouns, capital letters, full stops, adjectives, etc as well as tackling spelling in each chapter. Unlike most English books on the market, it requires the child to answer questions in complete sentences, has writing exercises to extend storywriting or factual writing, gives examples of further reading if your child has enjoyed the extract each comprehension piece is taken from and suggests "Other things to do..." with extra activities.
For me, these are really the best books on the market if you are looking for something beyond a simple workbook. I should point out that your child will need to complete the exercises in a different notebook, the answers cannot simply be 'filled in'. There is also an answer book Junior English Book 1 Answer Book, although at this age you may be able to do without it. However, as the series progresses you might prefer to have the answer book at hand. Either way, this is an excellent buy and will certainly improve your child's written English.

As a home educator I often sit for hours marking work. This answer book makes that job easier as I can see the correct answers at a quick glance and do not have to sit for ages working stuff out (just because I home educate don't mean I know all the answers lol).

This slim volume (31 pages) is the answer book for Junior English Book 1, a workbook for Year 3 (7-8) pupils. It is simply and clearly laid out and easy to use, should you feel you require the answer book - although you may be able to do without one with a book aimed for this age group. Like all the books in this series though, it is well produced and the workbooks (textbooks) are certainly of a very high standard.

Excellent for use in home school
We use these with my 7 year old homeschooled son. Ofcourse he is not keen on English. But I think these are pretty good. Good book suggestions. Nice pages. Read more
