Product Description

Product Description

"Dr Lonnie Smith typically infuses his music with enough energy to light a city block" (Tad Henderickson, Star Ledger) and with Jungle Soul, in addition to his recent appearances with Stanton Moore, the Dr is reaching out to the Jam Band audience. Crossing generations and genres, Lonnie is reaching out to this younger audience where they play the same tunes but, in Lonnie's words, "upbeat and with a lot more force." Lonnie says, "I want to reach more than the average jazz listener, I want to reach everyone – and that's not an easy job to do. I want to bring more people to this kind of music, so they can hear it and enjoy it." Featuring Peter Bernstein (guitar), Allison Miller (drums) and Matt Balitsaris (rhythm & acoustic guitar).

Another decent effort from hammond B3 master Dr Lonnie Smith but not quite up to the standard of his last effort "Too Damn Hot".This album sees him concentrate on mainly mid-tempo grooves with some of those trademark left handed runs up and down the keyboard. The major drawback is that some of the tracks lack a bit of punch that would really make you sit up and listen. That apart there is much fine music to be had and am pleased to hear a 2 guitar front line on this album with the always excellent Peter Berstein taking all the guitar solos and proving the perfect foil to Dr Lonnie.Pick of the tracks is a very lively version of "Willow weep for me" which really works when played at a faster than normal tempo. Not the greatest Smith album but one that'll do very nicely thankyou.

HASH(0x940e8be8) out of 5 stars hot hammond man 21 July 2006
By dark energy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Lonnie Smith just seems to be able to ignite the Hammond B3 organ like nobody else. Larry Goldings comes close as does Joey DeFrancisco, but Dr. Lonnie is THE MAN! I really loved his older Blue Note recordings as well as his last release: TOO DAMN HOT, and this new one comes in a close second. Great grooves and quite a few jazz based tracks as well. A bit more low key than Too Damn Hot but STILL HOT!!!

HASH(0x9ca41080) out of 5 stars unbelievably great 15 April 2007
By Michael J. Pronko - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The whole concept of jungle soul may feel a bit unusual to old B3 fans, but this CD will be a classic. Two drums, two guitars and the organ, what could go wrong? Nothing, in short. this baby cooks hard. The wildness and greasiness of older B3 styles is stripped down here to its bare, gut-cool essence. That's good, very good. Listening to this over and over will MAKE you cool. Dig into how the rhythms and melody flip up and then flip back over, in a super-low-fi way and you'll start to get into the concept, and start your shoulders, then your neck, then the rest of you twisting and swaying to the jungle soul groove...
HASH(0x9683e4d4) out of 5 stars Incredible organ jazz 19 Nov. 2012
By Palomar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'm a big jazz organ fan (Joey D, Jimmy Smith etc.), I've listened to this CD about 75 times, I've seen Dr. Lonnie Smith perform live about a half dozen times. On this CD, I especially like Trouble Man, Simone, Witch Doctor and Blue Moment. There are a few songs on here that I simply skip over.
HASH(0x9683db58) out of 5 stars ... unique phrasing and subtle tones simmer then suddenly explode like a teapot reaching full stream 19 Oct. 2015

A master jazz B-3 artist - Lonnie's unique phrasing and subtle tones simmer then suddenly explode like a teapot reaching full stream. It's 60's jazz filled with angst, turmoil, soulful beauty, an album not to be missed.

Perhaps, when listening with a Comparative Mind, this album is a 4, however, when listening from the Oneness of Soul... it's definitely a 5!
