5.0 out of 5 stars The Jungle Deserves Five Stars, 5 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Ok, this book was written at the turn of century, but what do you think was the single greatest impetus for the FDA? This book is supposed to be fiction, but it is factual. I had an aunt that worked in Chicago in the early 20's and told me what went on with production of candies. YECCH. Read this book and it will change your mind about a lot of what we take for granted.

This is well written and deserves to be among the top 100 books of this century. It changed my mind and today I am constantly aware of consumer problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book sent out the truth about this time period., 6 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I read this book for school and it opened my eyes of the hardships of the meat packing industry in that time. I couldn't believe the conditions people had to live in and survive in every day. I think this book is excelent and I would recomend it to any history buff or anyone looking for a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Relentless exploitation...unfortunately polemic conclusion, 26 Oct 2000
By Hill Walker "Pennine Dweller" (The Pennines of course!) - See all my reviews
I was staggered that such conditions existed in any industry even at the time in which the book was set. It strikes me nonetheless, that it was very much a template for the foundation of the wealth of many industrialised and economically powerful nations. Loses a star as the last section has little of the crushing narrative that raises the rest of the book to such eye watering levels.

2.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WAS NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT.
As I said in the top the book was good but not as good as I thought. I think that if you had nothing to do but read a book, than this is the book for you.
